Alright /k/, I wanna know what the best caliber you've come across for long range precision shooting, at distances of 600 yards+

Hey OP, Whats the best car for driving 600 miles?

338 LM

308 win will also do with carefully selected ammo, rifle, glass and driver.
>>
>>29129253

6mm or 6.5mm cartridges. so .260, 6.5 CM, 6.5 Lapua, .243, 6mm BR, etc.

Is 6.5 Creedmoor the best 308 wildcat?
>>
>>29129638
>>29129628
So 6 CM is better than 6.5 CM?
>>
>>29129628
Looks like 6mm does the job more often than not

>>
>>29129681
no, from what I've seen they're just about equal but the top of the top have gotten more wins by like 2 people with 6 cm over 6.5 which is statistically irrelevant.

>>29129638
its not a wildcat, nor is it base on the .308, its based on the .30t/c

the three absolute best for 600-1000m is one of the following: 6.5 lapua, 6.5 creed, and .260 remington. I lean towards the first two, and I think the lapua hasn't been utilized to its full potential yet because most folks haven't pushed the envelope yet in regards to its ability to handle pressure.

>>29129570
this guy has very little knowledge. He isn't 100% wrong about .308, but .338LM is far and away NOT the best cartridge for long range shooting.
>>
>>29129628
which one of the 6-6.5mm rounds would /k/ recommend for a new full auto military rifle? considering the engagements in afghanistan are usually upto 600 meters or more. lets says the military changed its philosophy and decided to build rifles that are the most effective at ranges upto 1000 meters. which one of the various 6-6.5 mm rounds would be the best?
>>
>>29129253

600 class? 6mm BR, no question.

You can take it out to 1000 too.
>>
>>29132179
Too be fair most of /k/ doesn't really know about much ammo and would recommend we go to 55.6x450mm SUPERNATO or some dumb shit like that.

While there are a number of good 6.5 rounds for that round, I'd actually suggest something in the 6.8mm category- the .277 Wolverine round. It's kinda like 6.8 SPC and .300 Blackout had a baby, and that baby was awesome. It is a 5.56 NATO round that has been necked up to 6.8mm and shortened to allow it to be put in the same magazines as 5.56. It exceeds the energy of .300 blackout and 5.56 NATO at 300 yards, and im sure if you used bullets that had a decent form factor you'd see that trend continue out to 600 yards.
>>
>>29134083
>energy

Wow its fucking nothing.

What's the BC? What's the drop? How well does it buck wind? How's the powder burn/inherent accuracy in relative terms?

Glass houses, throwing stones, et cetera. (spc is shit btw)
>>
>>29129253
>nobody suggests 7mm rem mag

Its literally a better 300wm with less recoil
>>
>>29134886
You obviously aren't taking into account what the question was asking, it was asking about full auto, not a sniper round. The question itself was a little unrealistic imo but the point stands that .277 wolverine will increase range and energy over 5.56 AND .300 blackout (which is what is recommended on average by most folks when asked what to replace 5.56 with) while at the same time having excellent subsonic and suppressed ballistics.

Also, the BC is bullet by bullet, thats like asking me to tell you the BC of the 6.5 creedmoor, id have to summarize every 6.5 bullet's BC. Instead, take a look at the widely available ballistic data for 6.8mm bullets produced by several different companies. Also, check out mad dog weapons to get more info on the cartridge itself.
>>
>>29134903
so are the 6.5 caliber rounds suggested, and with even less recoil.
>>
6.5-264 norma

Not my post, but might be worth noting that .338 LM was (primarily) not really intended as long range target shooting round for civilian market. What it was designed for was is to be an excellent long range sniper rifle round for the military - with capability of shooting through bodyarmor and when needed for putting holes to all kinds of expensive equipment and lightly armored vehicles from a great distance.

>.300 blackout (which is what is recommended on average by most folks when asked what to replace 5.56 with)

Lol what people are you talking too? Mall ninjas? People larping as covert opr8trs using subsonic rounds even though they never use a suppressor? 6.5 Grendel blows it out of the water (and 6br does everything Grendel does but better).
>>
>>29135085
.338 LM has better ballistic coefficient than 6.5 creedmoor.
>>
>>29129253
depends on the maximum range you want to use it.
up to 1000 yards it's somewhere between 6.5x47 and .284 win.
>>
>>29129638
6.5 has the best ballistic coefficient of any caliber.

7mm rem mag owns.

To the OP question. It's all a lot of tradeoffs. Larger calibers tend to be more effective for big tough animals. It's like that 458 Lott, not great BC, high recoil but it will kill elephants, rhinos etc. So along those lines, a 300 Win Mag is generally going to be better at killing than a 22-250, unless you're shooting prarie dogs (what is more precise than shooting prarie dogs?).

Even if you're only shooting paper, a heavier bullet is better at not being blown around by wind.

The tradeoff is that a smaller caliber and/or lighter bullet typically requires less powder and will generate less recoil. 6XC and 243 win are good 6mm cartridges.

6.5-284 win is probably best for long range (1000 yard) target shooting in a variety of conditions, but it's somewhat more expensive due to higher barrel wear.

284 win is also excellent if you want something in 7mm that's not belted, but it's probably necessary to reload to shoot it.

7 wsm is basically an updated version of 7mm rem mag (no belt, more efficient geometry, less powder to achieve the same velocity). And 7 RSAUM is a further improved 7wsm. But both of these are more impractical than 284 win. They might require a custom barrel due to unavailable factory chambered rifles and brass for RSAUM might be hard to find (though midway currently has nosler and norma 7rsaum brass in stock).

Finally, moving into 30 cal, 300 Win mag is a military cartridge, which might have some appeal and makes it fairly common, easy to find a rifle chambered in it, generally possible to find factory ammo etc. And of course 308 win is the most popular round for long range shooting ever (see http://palma.org/ ), and it's definitely easiest to get by far.

tl;dr there is no best, get one of each.
>>
Keep in mind that .300 Winmag has an absurdly short barrel life for target shooting.
>>
>>29135746
Would be perfectly adequate, but .308 has far better selection of factory loads and rifles.
