You're halfway right. Wallet guns, cane guns, pen guns, and knife guns are all AOWs.
With wallet guns, it only becomes an AOW when paired with the holster.

Only because with wallet guns you can shoot it without removing the gun from the wallet. Not the case with a pack of smokes. Gun can't be shot inside it. So not technically an AOW

No, you're halfway right. there are pen guns that are AOW's and ones that aren't. If you can fire it from a concealed position it's an AOW.

Bedroom H&K .45 is behind the night stand.
Living room Colt .45 is on the underside of the coffee table.
Den Glock 19 is behind the gun safe.
Dining room CZ 9mm is in a vase.
Gararge Judge is in the HD catalauge and a M14 in a stack of paint tins soldered together.
Plus various knives, clubs, spears and swords decorating the walls in plain sight in easy access brackets.

There are holsters that are in the shape of a wallet that fit most pocket pistols, but work just like any other pocket holster. Those are fine while still giving the look of having a wallet in your pocket.
The AOW ones have a cutout specifically to allow drawing and firing the whole thing. That's why they're AOW's.
I haven't seen one yet where you actually have to pull out a wallet-like object, open it like a wallet, THEN remove the gun. And yeah, that would be retarded.
