Saw this article about comparing some different brands of ammo, seems like a good study. Really, is there any reason to not just use cheap steel cased ammo?

http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/

Also general ammo thread I guess. Comparing different brands and cartridges and whatnot.

If you want accuracy, you reload your cases, or your rifle doesn't like steel case.
>>
>>29116221
For plunking I shot the cheapest whatever I can get but as the other Anon said, for rifle accuracy, for reloading and also for defensive carry (more because you want a quality hollow point that won't corrode), yeah it matters.
>>
what is some g2g brands of .223 I should stock up on

I asked in another thread about stocking up on a shitload and as much as I could find the cheapest cpr on ammoseek I dont mind spending another few cents a piece if it means even slightly better quality
>>
>>29116221
The analogy I use is the cartage is both the tires and the gas of the gun. If you are just doing around town stuff then cheap is fine but if you want performance then you have to figure out what works best in your gun.
>>
>>29116221
if you are concerned about accuracy avoid steel cased cause its inconsistant as fuck. if you just want to plink steel is fine

an exception is the cz 527. it was designed for steel case ammo and actually performs better with it.

just get a bunch of 193

Reloading steel cased .45acp tula isnt difficult, and it holds up well. Ive shot the same steel cases several times times before they crack. Didnt make it QUITE to 10, but 8 isnt bad.

I get that some guns wont cycle steel, but why do reloaders hate steel? Is it that steel doesnt expand like brass?
>>
>>29116459
because it fucks up your dies.
>>
>>29116459
I too have used a number of tula 45 steel to reload just as an experiment. I got 6-10 reloads per case before they split. Considering how abundant good quality brass is, I do not intend to load steel again but it is certainly a much much better material than aluminum. Half the aluminum cases crack when adding a light bell to the case, the other half crack when seating a bullet.

Steel casings are nearly as soft as brass

Ive never tried aluminum. I guess i never will.

Wolf gold. It's taiwanese surplus 193
>>
>>29116748
... That's just false. Look at the Young's moduli (E) for the metals.

Brass: 102-125 GPa
Aluminum: 69 GPa
Steel: 180-200 GPa

Stiffness is EA/l, where E is YM, A is cross-sectional area, and l is length. For similar geometries (say, a case), steel is significantly stiffer.
>>
>>29117242
Steel can be made just as soft as brass. Brass has better expansion and contraction.
>>
I shoot cheap steel case if I'm just plinking with my ak or something.

Usually shoot brass cased stuff though because I reload, but I can buy bulk 7.62x39 steel case cheaper than I can load it.

Anyone know much about this ammo?

I heard most people that try it, stick with it, but it's expensive.
>>
>>29118254
its stopping power is absolute shit it takes decades for someone to even notice they've been hit
>>
>>29117278
>Steel can be made just as soft as brass
how exactly?
>>
>>29118357
Brass and steel are alloys. Steel is usually tempered, but by heating it above temper point and letting it cool naturally you remove the temper and it is now soft as shit.

>>29116221

I carry a 9mm in my car, specially in the compartment in the driver side (left handed master race), I have a mag of 115 grain fmj in the gun and then a mag of 147 grain hollow point in the center console.

Would a 115 grain fmj go through the car door and still have enough energy to stop an attacker?

My plan is if I'm in the car and somebody is trying to carjack me ot whatever I can shoot him through my door.

Is this stupid?

It's stupid, but not because of the ammunition

it really depends on the tightness of groupings and the range that you want to hit a target at.

obviously match grade brass ammo will be better, but only for the aforementioned reasons. nothing more
>>
>>29118553
Unless a manufacturer specifically states their steel cases are tempered to be the same as brass, it would be prudent to err on the side of caution. Anyone with enough brain cells to rub together should know that.
>>
>>29118766
Obviously. He was asking HOW, not if it was smart.

Which is about par for this board.
>>
>>29117242
steel case ammunition is usually softer than other types of steel. i doubt its hard enough in most cases to damage a reloading die.
>>
>>29118630
Could say the same about any cigs.
