Yeah, that part irked me as well.
Stock sights on a lot of pistols are more concerned about being low profile for conceal carry and not hanging on your clothes.
The high shelf thing while a useful trick is still mall ninja tier training hype.
Most people shot in their support arm are not going to have the balls of steel to keep fighting and do stylish one handed charging of a weapon.
And even if your thumb is shot off, you can still grab a slide and rack it with your palm.

I asked a gun store owner why they rolled this out when the SR9 filled the same role.
His answer was that Ruger is discontinuing the SR9 and the American is it's replacement. They just rolled it out early to segue between the two, so there wouldn't be a break in availability.
That could be complete bullshit for all I know, but that's what he told me.

Good FUCK why don't they get this shit? The PX4 is the only one that didn't do it, and I'd imagine an M&P wouldn't if I shot one, and that's because they had fairly rounded grips. But that makes polymer insufferable; why do they all keep designing the same shit that does that?

Watch the video at the top, they describe it well. There's something about the way they keep squaring off where the pistol meets your hand at the grip angles used on these polymer guns that sits them right against the knuckle of your thumb if you hold one in the way that most people are trained. This is especially true with the American pistol, where, with picture evidence, they show how everyone that fired it for their review had the same issue.

I don't know what "knuckle bite" is, but what he's talking about in the video is a non-rounded corner or edge at the web of the hand which is uncomfortable after shooting for long periods of time, not "bite." The Walther PPQ has a similar ledge at the thumb, pic related, which digs into the thumb.
"Bite" is what happens when the slide tears the top of your hand if you are gripping too high or are too fat.

You're stuck on the semantics of "bite." The recoil pushes that back into the hand and causes uncomfortably or, in some cases, skins the knuckle in that spot. You talked about it. That's all it is. I called it "knuckle bite." You seem to be stuck on the term "slide bite," which I would understand if there was a connection other than "bite."
That's all there is to it. It's annoying that they make those non-rounded edges that are uncomfortable. It's poor design.
