We usually gave that up when command started realizing flying in such close formation negates the tie/ins smaller target profile. We tend to only do that during atmospheric strafes, bomber escorts, or sometimes raiding freighters and transports.
During dogfights, we let the dumbfuck tie/on squadrons fly in tight formation as cannon fodder, while we swoop in for the kill.
You'd be surprised how much tactics have evolved for the tie/in. They're not the death traps they were. Considering newer models have concussion warheads, we've got a fighter that can fuck up capital ships in a raid.

Mon Calamari cruisers have always been my favorite.
Pretty much the only rebel craft. Which is hilarious, because they're basically gigantic jury-rigged transporters outfitted with mil-spec shields and weapons.
I saw one of these pass through a crossfire of 2 victory-class star destroyers without a single hull-hit. All the while returning fire, from behind even as it fled. It disabled both SD's engines with its ion cannons before making hyperspace and escaping. I would like to see how it could stand up to a couple imperial class SDs though.
I guess there's a reason why they're retiring a lot of Victory II's. They're good for atmospheric blockades, but we already have more than we need for that job.
