Don't forget
>even the latest model of MBT doesn't have APS as anything more than an upgrade package that isn't standard to all tanks.

ERA is a technological dead end, active defenses are the way to go.

Liquid hydrogen? fuck that, nuclear powered aircraft all the way.
>>
>>28495508
Nope, layered defense friends. They cover different threats.
>>
>>28495508
No it isn't, ERA is just one component of a layered defense.
You don't just rely on composite armor or ERA anymore.
Now you have composite armor, ERA, hard kill and soft kill APS acting as layers.

ERA is great because it gives you greatly increased protection for very little weight.
If you want the same protection that ERA gives, but instead using composite armor, you'd have ten times as much weight.
>>
>>28495583
The issue is, with the Russians, is that they rely on the ERA as a base defensive armor because they are scared of heavy tanks.

The real meme is American ERA being somehow worse.
The problem with relying on ERA is that it can be countered much more eailsy than

>they rely on ERA as base defense

No they don't, they have composite armor underneath the ERA.

So for a Cold War era T-80, the defensive layer was ERA - Composite armor.
For today's T-90s, the defensive layer is soft kill APS - ERA - Composite armor.

>the real meme is American ERA being somehow worse

That's because it's true, we have heavier tanks and better composite armor. We haven't done any advanced heavy ERA like the Eastern Block did.
>>
>>28495677
>No they don't, they have composite armor underneath the ERA.

Yes, and its pitiful.

Look up the RHA equivalent without the ERA of a T-90.

Prepare to laugh.

Which model? Because they vary DRASTICALLY. Also remember these are estimates and not precise numbers.
>>

>Because they vary DRASTICALLY.

The base armor?

The A got a welded turret, but that's it.
>>
>>28495716
IIRC the RHA equivalent for the T-90A without K-5 ERA is somewhere around 600mm vs KE.
Which is around 200mm less than the M1A1, I believe.
>>
>>28495818
Oh yeah it's nothing right? Fuck off man. It's largely different composites from the first T-90 model. Don't forget the T-90MS with all the upgrades being done to T-90A to T-90AM using T-90MS technologies.
>>
>>28495849
>Oh yeah it's nothing right?
Well its not some DRASTIC change to the composites.

>. Don't forget the T-90MS with all the upgrades being done to T-90A to T-90AM using T-90MS technologies.

Which has nothing to do with the base composites, and everything to do with the ERA.

no they are not (nowhere near as noisy as your average ifv or mbt) but that was not their intended role.
their intended role was to provide sneaky sneaky all terrain carry capacity for commandos.

Yes!

It is the RUSSIAN ROBOT RABBIT! Saves the motherland with agile legs, unlike Sergei who is always drunk and nowhere near as agile as Russian Robot Rabbit - usually falls down too.

Russian robot rabbit runs SO FAST that even Stalin's murderous gaze would not be able to catch it - it can evade American fire control systems and gulag sentences every time.

forever* with no fatigue. Also, thats 40lbs that an infantry man doesn't have to carry.

>has a very short range due to battery limitations

Not only are you assuming you know the battery tech that are/will be used. You seem to miss the point that as energy storage tech increases it becomes a non issue. Or put some form of rtg, solar, or hydrogen fuel cell and it has entered a different world.

Over all, your view is very much like that of early 20th Century American strategists that decided the plane was, and always would, be useless in military applications.

*Barring mechanical/material stress
>>
>>28497709
>Not only are you assuming you know the battery tech that are/will be used
No you stupid nigger, I'm quoting the actual findings by the Marine Corps, who tested both the Spot and the Bigdog and rejected them.

I know full well that robots will dominate the battlefield eventually. The point is that current robots are at the stage of the Wright Flyer in terms of combat-effectiveness, and as such are a liability instead of an asset. This will obviously not be the case forever (and the sooner it changes, the better), but we aren't talking about future spaceman times, we're talking about robots that exist right now.

i don't think anyone thinks we should employ big dogs right now, in this very moment, at the present time, rather, under the assumption that an active effort to test it in such manner is already being done, the results should be positive enough to unequivocally continue pursuing the perfectioning of the concept.
