So long story short I fired my 12 gauge without my ears. A mistake of course (they fell off and I didn't notice)

My ears have been ringing for about 15 minutes and counting. Is this going to go away when I sleep, in a couple of hours or am I fucked?
>>
>>28377321
>Is this going to go away when I sleep, in a couple of hours or am I fucked?
Yes, I've shot shotguns without hearing protection plenty of times, it'll go away shortly.
Rifles are much louder and handguns even louder than that.
I can't shoot a rifle or hand gun without hearing protection at all, it's just too dangerous.
Even a shotgun is too loud to safely shoot repeatedly though so don't do it again.
>>
Should be alright. Be lucky it wasn't a handgun. I had my ears off talking to my cousin while looking at some targets down range, and he pulled his sidearm out and popped one off parallel to my left ear. Still ringing 6 months later
>>
>>28377321
50/50 chance of being fucked for good.
Sounds over 120db can instantly damage your ear.
>>
>>28377329

I once fired a .45 handgun with no ear pro. Worst mistake I've ever made.
>>
>>28377321
I stood fairly near the front at a motorhead concert and my ears rang and it felt like i was underwater for two days but it fixed itself. I was 17 at the time though, maybe age plays a part.

Anyway a couple of hours to days and it'll be fine just don't do this too often.
>>
>>28377329
Ok thanks cummy, thank god I didn't go with the s&w R8 and chose the mossberg instead

>>28377339
That's rough man, I hope it goes away soon
>>
>>28377339
Samefag again. I'll add Too that when it went off next to my ear, I felt it 'pop' and a quick pain, lost about 30% of my hearing if I had to guess. Everything immediately sounded underwater and distorted with the ringing. If you didn't have anything like that OP it's probably just short term damage
>>
How do people deal with self defense shootings without ear protection?

Do you just accept the hearing loss?
>>
You'll likely be fine. If you aren't however, cherish the memories you have of what silence sounds like, because you will soon forget it.
>>

Get a suppressor, or put on electronic ear pro if possible
If you can't get a suppressor or don't have time for ear pro then you're kinda fucked
>>
>>28377321

it should go away senpai

I've had mild tinnitus(quiet buzzing that comes and goes when there is little sound) for as long I can remember but after a music concert I had full on constant ringing in my ears

I though I would never get off this ride

but by the next few days everything was back to normal
>>
>>28377367
You accept it.
I like to pretend such vast amounts of shooting gave me a ton of exp, and I gained tinnitus as a trophy to remind me how many times I leveled up. The eternal tone fork of victory.

Idk man, you either learn to ignore it, make up random shit to make yourself laugh, or go insane. Your choice.
>>
>>28377376
I ate a whole bag of almonds which have good vitamin c. I mean I swallowed enough nuts to make me a porn star. Hope it helps
>>
>>28377321
>Is this going to go away when I sleep, in a couple of hours

Yes but you've still permanently damaged your hearing a little bit. You will likely notice at seemingly random times a high pitched ringing that only lasts for a few seconds. Fuck your ears over enough and it will become constant and permanent.
In short, use earpro you retard.
>>
Haveing close to the same problem, fired a handgun without ears on. My right ear became normal within the same day, my left ear has been ringing for the past 4 days, starting to think I fucked myself over.
>>
>>28377367

Well, it's either some minor hearing loss or being tyrone'd to death. Easy choice, for me at least.

I mean, yeah, you could wear some ear pro, but if I needed to move through my house and locate an intruder inside of it, I don't want anything hindering my senses.
>>
>>28377367
If you're scared enough your hearing cuts out (extreme cases but the sdden appearance of a knife weilding maniac does it).
>>
Try this, guys (Only takes a minute and it's helped me):

Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times. Some people experience immediate relief with this method. Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus
>>
>>28380289

Sound engineer here.

This is bullshit. If you have lasting tinnitus caused by high SPL exposure there is nothing you can do to reverse it.
>>
>>28377321

Dad ND'd a .38 special revolver while I was standing next to him.

Enclosed room in my parent's house, no ear pro.

Could hardly hear shit for a minute, ringing and pain for about 15 minutes after that. I haven't noticed any permanent damage to my hearing but I imagine there's stuff I won't be able to hear anymore.
>>
>>28380380

>sound engineer

Kek. Shut the fuck up you glorified board OP.

Who took the jelly out of your donut?
>>
>>28377369
This.
It should go away, a shotgun blast isn't too bad.
I actually had tinnitus for a year or two, now it's all but gone. I think I'm just down to the occasional ringing if it's absolutely silent around me, but I have heard silence again. I thought it was supposed to stay forever, it really drove me nuts the first few months.
>>
One thing I've always wondered is how the fuck war veterans hear at all. If one nd can fuck up ones hearing badly, how the hell is someone who emptied a 200 round belt of 7.62 NATO supposed to hear anything whatsoever again?
>>
My ears have been ringing since 1994. Deal with it.
>>
>>28381362
Or someone who fought indoors with a rifle, or a ww1 machine gunner who fired non stop for an hour? Is absolute fucking deafness a bigger problem among veterans than I thought or isnt the damage that severe?
>>
>>28380277
>your hearing cuts out
The sort of tunnel vision (tunnel hearing?) that you develop in high stress situations does nothing to prevent the physical structure of your inner ear from being damaged by loud noises.
>>
>>28377321
Take aspirin and vitamin e asap.
>>
Vitamin E and aspirin OP, it will help. A lot
>>
>>28381432
My cousin was in artillery and his high pitched hearing is so fucked he qualifies for disability.
>>
>>28381362

When you get that much adrenaline going your body knows to protect your ears. I don't know the science behind it, but if you've ever hunted you'll know you don't need ear pro and when you take the shot (even if sitting in an entirely enclosed hunting blind) you don't even notice the sound. No pain, no ringing, nothing. I think thats how you can get away with it in certain circumstances, but not while just shooting at a range.

Its true though. If you've ever fired a gun in combat you'd see. Also if you research defensive shootings (or police actions) they'll confirm it.

I know a guy who hunts regularly, but doesn't seem to be deaf at all ( never asked him if he has tinnitus though) but he's been taking down springbok with .308 and .303 british since he was a teenager, (he's nearly 60 now) and I've never seen him wearing earpro.

Did that, have tinnitus. I'm sure the fact that artillery was my mos has more to do with that, though.

same, with a 40. HK.
I have random bouts of ringing in one ear for 10 seconds or so every week or so.
not prima facie tinnitus so you can be sure MEPS won't hear about it, no pun intended.
>>
Im confused by this thread.
I shoot outdoors with my shotguns all the time and have never had any ear discomfort whatsoever. Even shooting my 40. Really isnt that bad.
Maybe im just weird
>>
>>28381962
outdoors with long guns is a far cry from indoors with pistols.
and besides, it doesn't have to be painful for you to lose hearing. even a slight ringing is enough.
>>
>>28377321
Bad news...

You have done permanent damage.

The ringing will... Hopefully stop. But you have lost some amount of hearing forever.

The bad news. The ringing may never go away 100% or it may fade and come back.

In the end. You will be sleeping with the fan on or a radio to drown it out.

Not OP here I have had tinnitus for years from shooting and work, recently it seems to be getting worse and I NEVER dont hear it.

any remedies to help cut the shit down a bit? I doubt there is any way to get rid of it completely.

>god this is fucking awful did i just get my hearing fucked by literally using earpro
>continues for about a week and a half
>finally goes away

God it was awful, and i am sure it was just a minor case of it. Can't imagine what real hearing damage is like. Just trying to get to sleep and all you can focus on is the ringing.
>>
If you can't beat it, join it. Or something like that. Accept it as a part of who you are, don't view it as an illness, or something that needs to be fixed. I drove myself nuts, had to sleep with a radio on, got stressed out etc. until I figured out a different mindset.
>>
>>28383867

No, im about as bitch as they come, but even i dont bitch about something as asinine as tinnitus.

It comes with the territory of shooting.

Very few escape having firearms as a serious hobby without it.

So yes, harden the fuck up.
>>
>>28377321
probably not ive shot some .40 and 9's and some 5.56 with out ear protection (way more than one shot) and a 30-06 and a 12 gauge once and my ears are ok

I don't use earpro and now I can't hear so well anymore.

In the end, it all worked out.

This.
I finally learned to not care about the sound when trying to sleep. Easier said than done though.

Though the best way to block it out is a smart phone, foam earbuds, and a white noise app. I liked brown or pink noise better personally. Brown noise reminds me of sleeping on an airliner.

RELATED QUESTION.

If I constantly wear earplugs for a few years, when I take them out will I have superhuman hearing ability?
>>
>mfw ear trauma from 10 consecutive .270 shots

never ever going away ;_;
>>
>>28381513
....your body isnt just going to magically form earpros in your ear. Soundwaves will enter your ear or through your body and to the little bone (hence ear protection can only go so high).

Your brain might not process the sound or pain, much like how some people who have been shot in a firefight dont notice or feel very little. The damage is done, just because you dont feel that shit in the moment does not mean you're safe. Hell, you also realize that hearing loss can also happen little by little, right? You slowly lose the ability to hear certain things and you dont realize it because its so small. But eventually, you just cant hear dick because you think you can treat hearing like strength training.

I've had tinitus for years before i even held a gun.

I don't know what silence sounds like anymore.
>>
I've had tinnitus for a couple years now and it's fucking annoying though I've gotten to the point where it really doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of life anymore but rather a minor annoyance.

I'm not entirely sure it was caused by firearms because the ringing started a couple days after the last time I had shot any guns. I went to an ENT and he discovered some tissue had worked its way into my ear and he removed it and flushed my ear out and the ringing went away but then a couple weeks later the ringing came back. Later I went to a different (cheaper) ENT and he told me that I have hearing loss in my left ear which is causing my brain to interpret the difference as a ringing noise, however my primary physician doesn't agree especially given how my right ear often itches and feels wet and irritated.

tl;dr: FML

You are criminally inattentive and I frankly don't think you should be handling a firearm. I'm glad the only guy who got fucked over in that situation was you.

different anon here.

Do you really have time to put on ear pro in a home defense situation?

Maybe its just /k/ being retarded but there were people here berating anons who didnt keep a shell chambered in their home defense shotgun, because it takes too long to chamber it.

Realistically speaking, how long would you have to either hide or hunt tyrone?
>>
>>28389678
>Do you really have time to put on ear pro in a home defense situation?
if you put it right next to your home defense weapon I don't see why you shouldn't be able to
that is of course assuming that the intruder isn't already in your bedroom and about to strangle you to death, in which case you simply smoke the fucker and deal with the inevitable tinnitus

>there were people here berating anons who didnt keep a shell chambered in their home defense shotgun, because it takes too long to chamber it.
that's different to keeping an optional piece of equipment within reach tho
see the aforementioned situation
if tyrone mcdindu is already inside your room you don't have time to put on earpro, and you don't have time to chamber a round either
the lack of earpro doesn't hinder you from killing an intruder dead
an unloaded gun does
