Check out your local used racks. I got 2 of these, 9mm and .45 Marlin Camp Carbines, for $350 and $400, respectively, within the last 5 years (can't remember when exactly). Absolute blast out to 50 yards.

Ruger american in 308. spend the rest on a vortex or nikon scope. you can buy fmj for $9.95/box at my local wallmart and good hunting and match ammo is everywhere.

What is it your looking for in your gun? Rifle or shotgun?
I own a M+M m10, it has only had one failure to eject with over 2200 rounds put through it, I feel that it was the casings fault and not the rifles, it also has a rail that comes with it so you can put shit on it, I bought it for 600 but you could probably find one for 500 that is used
