Yup. They'd moved loads of stuff out last I was there for some renovation. God knows where they've put the Blackbird and Liberator.
>>28360773
Was there a few times a few years ago. Volunteered at an airshow they had, was pretty cool. I thought the Zero they had was pretty cool, wrecked though it was. The entire place was pretty amazing, though a bit cramped feeling.
>>28360851
When I was a kid, about 20 years ago I saw Me109 'Black 6' flying at Duxford. I think at the time the only in the world with an original engine. Some time after that it crashed and is now in Hendon RAF museum.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gee_Bee_Q.E.D.
Not a production aircraft but part of a series of racing and touring aircraft. Jim Moss has built a variant powered by a 1425 hp engine instead of the 675 hp one used here.

>>28359118
this is the plane the a-10 wishes it was
>>28361418
The A-10 is faster and can carry more.
I saw Delmar Benjamin fly the Gee Bee R-1 replica at the Chrissy Field airshow in- oh, 2001? I didn't know it was going to appear, and my girlfriend (who knows a fre WWII aircraft) pointed out to the east and said "What's THAT?"
Radial engine....wheel pants? Nah- couldn't be- holy shit!. He did all these negative-G maneuvers with it. It's small and fast.

I hadn't heard about the self landing thing. Here's what a quick Wikipedia search yielded:
>One unusual flight characteristic of the early Victor was its self-landing capability; once lined up with the runway, the aircraft would naturally flare as the wing entered into ground effect while the tail continued to sink, giving a cushioned landing without any command or intervention by the pilot.
>>28367428
why were the Vulcan and Victor so perfect? They were decades ahead of their time
>>28367479
Not only that but I think that they were some of the sexiest large planes ever built.
>>28355163

When I was a kid I was 10/10 autistic about WW2 aircraft. I'll never forget my first airshow, walking towards the flight line from the parking lot and spotting an F6F at a distance. I was like, holy shit the Avenger is HUGE in real life. Then I saw an actual Avenger next to it. I was totally shocked how big they are compared to my imagination. Anyone else have an experience like this?

Perhaps the biggest it gets. QT Erebus.
>>28358640
sick, thats Nauticus in Norfolk right? been there many times on field trips when i was a kid. I go over the monitor-merrimac bridge/tunnel four days a week to work and can see all of the ships in the distance and it blows my mind how gigantic they are in person
I've gotta be honest; I only come to /k/ for aviation threads these days. I don't care about guns. I'm wondering if there should be an aviation board. I'm just afraid it won't get as much traffic.

>>28367804
It's pretty crazy than modern fighters are bigger and heavier than WW2 bombers.
Does a 140 kg, 6 m wingspan RC jet count as big?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeL3LhrmeME
Man it's a shame England stopped making their own aircraft
Their 50s jets were cool as fuck
>>28370742

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtI1KYTtMDI
>>28367728
Well theres an air museum fairly close to me with a Tomcat outside and the first time I drove past it it startled me on how big fighters really are
>>28370819
>need crazy big engines to go crazy fast

>result is a crazy huge plane

Big and sexy
The Short Stirling bomber.
>>28367728
>I was like, holy shit the Avenger is HUGE in real life.
Aircraft mech here.
I can give you a similar experience...
It was like my second week on the job. We had one of my employers old DC-3's on ramp... next to MD-11. DC-3 fuselage was roughly same diameter as rear engine nacelle on tail of MD-11. Wingspan wasn't much different between DC-3 and MD-11's tail.
