So I bathed a stock in mineral spirits to get rid of cosmoline and I want to rehydrate it without using linseed oil or tung oil. I dont want any real finish on the wood. It's an M39 mosin so its not supposed to have a lacquer.
What should I use, just gun oil?

I havent taken off the original finish so I dont see any reason to put on a new one. its an M39 so i dont want to bubba it.

Honestly I'd just go with one or maybe two layers of tung oil if all you want to do is re-hydrate the wood. You won't add any real finish to it with plain oils until after multiple coats.
Alternatively you might try something like pic related.
But keep in mind anything you use is going to discolor the wood. Tung oil wood make it darker, as would pic related. Linseed oil makes it yellowish (and has an odor).

Most surplus guns have an oil finish, not a lacquer.
Use boiled linseed oil. Hand rub, many coats. Heat from rubbing helps soak it in. Moderate use of hair dryer helps too. Don't put it on too thick. Patients grasshopper. Nothing looks better or more realistic on a military rifle than rubbed linseed oil. If you put it on too thick though it will be sticky forever.
