I once went AWOL for a week to take part in a free fly skydiving competition in Norway.
I did ask the chain of command if I could book time off and go but they said no, so I went anyway.
Once I got back I just got yelled at by everyone (But apparently its a funny story and no one has been stupid enough to do something like this before so they laughed afterwards)
But I had to work two months every weekend sweeping up garages and stuff, it was alright because I needed to save money anyway.
Usually if you fuck up hard enough like punch someone or crash a car you can go to ''Colly'' which is Army jail.
A friend of mine went once for crashing the COs car drunk and ending up in hospital pretending to be the CO so his entire family turned up thinking he had got really injured.
In all honesty its fucking hilarious what you can get away with without losing your job.

Balloon drop, RAF Abingdon. Families assembled for the demonstration, about 1500 spectators in total of all ages and backgrounds. Senior officers, veterans, foreign observers and a number of MPs all present. As the men (and boys, some of them) jump, their names and rank are read out over a loudspeaker system. About five men in, a name is read and a Sergeant drops. The parachute isn't deployed and the man hits the ground with a hell of a thud, from an 800 foot drop.
Britain was quite a calm and reserved country back then, but that didn't stop the apparent widow from bursting into tears. He had actually dressed up a rather convincing dummy up in full kit, sneaked around the back of the crowd and stood behind his wife and kids. We saw the funny side of it. OC didn't, neither did many other sensible people. Docked six months pay, three months extras and I believe the jump instructor who had gone along with it was discharged.
Result: Most of those involved in the joke found themselves not getting promoted again, ever.

In the end in my country it would depend whether you are a Conscript or a paid soldier. If you are paid, you probaply would get a warning and a slap on the wrist if it was first offense.
If you are conscript you get a small punishment. But that punishment kicks you out of Military Police, it can kick you out of Paratroopers, Combat Divers, Panzerjaegers, and other specialized forces, depending on the severity of the punishment and crime as seen by the investigation.
If a conscript gets kicked out of their current post they will land on something nearby that isn't so picky. Like Supply, but its ok, its chill in Supply.

Police and Military are usually two different things. If you need food on duty, it will either be delivered to you or you leave your weapons supervised while you get it.
It's not like we have armed soldiers walking our city streets daily, so the assumption is that the persons involved would be doing it during war-excersizes or training.
Military personel that need to be "flexible" enough to simulate your need to carry, are usually armed with weapons that can be and are holstered when walking around, unless there is a special circumstances that they would be carrying their assault rifles.
it's also a part of the culture of not wanting to scare civilians and cause a fuss.

Hell, the army's main HQ is located across the road from one of the biggest malls in the country, and the soldiers there are basic office workers, so they get an hour to an hour and half break time every day so the mall is filled with them.

They did something similar to that when I went through bootcamp. We had a class of sorts in this large auditorium, I forgot exactly what they called it nothing has normal names in the Marine Corps. They march the entire training battalion into the Auditorium and at the beginning of the class they told us to put out heads down and close our eyes. The Battalion Commander starts talking and tells us that North Korea has just declared war on South Korea and attacked one of our Battle groups in the Pacific. Our Entire Training program was going to be cut short 4 weeks and then we would be flying to Seoul to get ready For a Push to Kaesong while an amphibious landing would be taking place off the coast of Wonsan. This was about 5 years ago and the wars in the middle east were virtually done. Those of us who didn't have an infantry MOS weren't likely seeing any combat deployments. BC starts explain that he understands that none of us really though we would be going into full scale war with Korea and anybody who raised their hand now they would separate out of raining and could go home. he instructed anybody who raised their hand could get up and go outside to go to admin to start their paper work to go home. Eye's closed head still down start hearing bunches of footsteps and chairs moving hearing a lot of people walking outside. Me, not being a 17, 18 year old kid straight out of high school knew the political climate enough to know the whole story was bullshit so I didn't raise my hand and kept seated. BC says we can raise our heads and open our eyes starts talking a little bit and tells us the whole story was BS and to look around at who wasn't there. Quite a few empty seats.
