Why is 8mm so expensive anymore? I know that the wishing well for yugosurp ammo dried up a while back, but still. I can get most other calibers for such a cheaper price per round. Why is it that 8mm is so expensive?
Because there isn't enough demand to cause more manufacturers to tool up for 8mm. Same thing with 303 British and 7.7 jap.

Don't know why to be honest OP. When I first got my Mauser in 8mm last year round this time I got a spam can of Romanian surp for her. After I wasted all 340 rounds I tried finding another one but it completely dried up. Now it's just Yugo m75 which is nearing the price of PPU, which is all I buy now. I wish it were as cheap as 54r. It's a savage round.

They show up on various ammo site or for private sale. PPR is around 20-25c. I've heard people at gun shows try to sell them for 30 or 40c per round, but that's a rip off for the quality of ammo.

If the trade restrictions with Russia or China are lifted then we'll get more cheap ammo. If not, you better hope some former comblock country has more ammo stashed somewhere.
