A basic AR is probably what you're looking for. If money is no issue you may as well get a well known quality one, a couple dozen mags, a decent optic, and a few thousand rounds of ammo to practice with and learn basic marksmanship.

Buy a naked (no furniture) or regular colt 6920. I'm not a colt fanboy, but they are a rifle that's going to work, not give you troubles, and has the brand name in case you ever want to sell it, you'll get damn near full price you paid

Consider a ruger mkii or mkiii pistol.
Its a really accurate .22lr semiauto pistol.
The gun is perfect for learning to shoot pistols. A mkii is $300 a mkiii is $400+ i think
Of a ruger 10/22 to learn to shoot rifles. $300.
Or skip those and get an sks $400ish
Sks is fun easy to use and reliable.

The 10/22 is a fine rifle, but check out the Marlin 795 or 60. A good deal cheaper, and stock a better rifle. Of course if you trick out the 10/22 it will be far better, but those little marlins are great first guns, since they're dirt cheap.
