yeah, rails are supposed to be spot welded on, but had a flux core welder.. so i tried plug welding it... and then i fucked up and it wouldn't stay so i tried straight cut welding it and had some burn through, and then fixed that with more welding and before I know it... it looked like this...

110volt spot welder from harbor freight does just fine.
probably need to modify one of it's tongs or buy one from ak-builder to reach inside the receiver properly though.

Just to keep this thread on the rails because I'm interested: If I get an 80% jig, drill, receiver, etc. I can build a receiver, put the rest of the parts on it to turn it into a firearm, and not have to deal with a FFL/gubment? Did I get that right?

yes, 80% lowers do not have serial numbers and are not registered in the firearms database as far as I know

You still have to obey all state, federal, and local laws, but otherwise yes. You are allowed to build guns for your own personal use and enjoyment.

Ok, only reason you should need anything other than a spot welder is if you are trying to unobtrusively put in a third axis pin, which should be done with either MIG or TIG welding. The only good kind of flux core is dual shield for structural steel, which is not cheap but allows marginal labor savings over stick welding.
