The Owen sub machine gun was the right weapon in the right place at the right time.
Every small arms factory in Australia was working three shifts to equip the 2nd AIF.
Britten was also flat out replacing equipment lost in France.
The threat of Japanese expansion was known, plans made.
Along comes Owen and his SMG.
It was so simple to manufacture that any small machine shop could turn them out.
The defence minister gives the project to a junior MP.
Soon, small shops all over are making parts, not as fast as a dedicated factory but all the factories are already flat out.
One of those shops was the maintenance shop in the wrigglies chewing gum factory at crows nest.
They took bar stock and using a simple milling machine profiled it into the two piece front sight.
The barrel of the SMG would come in by truck in boxes of a hundred and the fitters and turners would braise on the front sight, re box them and send them onto another shop.
As the shop in crows nest had the complete drawings, they also turnrd out the occasional complete SMG gust for fun.
My grandfather was a fourth year apprentice in that shop.
