So at this moment in time, (December 22, 2015, 6:43PM) how many F-35s currently exist?

8

That's not accurate.
>>
>>28288419

154 have been delivered as of yesterday.

45 delivered to the US DOD so far this year is more than I expected in my opinion.
>>
>>28288419
A bunch.

Some of them even has engines.

More importantly, does the $500,000 helmet work yet?

About tree fiddy

>Some faggot drops it.
Are they durable atleast? If it's 500,000 dollarydoos, It better last 500 lifetimes.

I wasn't so concerned about the helmet until I heard that:

1. it can cause motion sickness
2. the plane cannot be operated properly without without.

Look at this webm of the F-22. Notice the green thing in the front of the cockput? That's the HUD, muy importante. That takes information from the plane's various sensors and condenses into a useful format and puts in right in front of the pilot's face. The HUD shows altitude, velocity, rounds/ammo remaining, radar-locks for missiles, and it acts as the pilot's gunsight if he choses to use the plane's internal cannon. The F-35 does not have this HUD because all the information is supposed to be integrated into the helmet. If the helmet doesn't work, then the plane doesn't work.
>>
>>28288858

what happens if the hud doesn't work?
>>
>>28288719
fuck that's cool wish I had one of these to browse the internet with, where I could have multiple programs projected onto my face concurrently and video and stuff
>>
>>28288719
Yes. It's been functioning fine in test flights.

>>28288797
IIRC, it's rated to last a few thousand hours. The latest versions are very durable and the technology is a bit wacky but basically mature. The greatest challenges were integration.

>>28288858
It's apparently disorienting to have it 'look though' the air frame. Like most things that cause motion sickness the best way to fix it is to expose yourself to it until it don't bother you anymore.

The MFD can display needed data in the event the HMD fails, but it's damn unlikely to fail. The aircraft can be safely operated without the HMD. Of all the problems to prevent a F-35 from being able to complete a mission I'd say HMD failing will be very low on the list.
>>
>>28288886
Put some cameras outside your house and look though the walls.

When this technology matures they are going to take the glass off aircraft.
>>
>>28288962
aww shit, COFFIN soon.
>>
>>28288962
Then why bother having the pilot inside the aircraft at all?
>>
>>28288962
uhhhh, but I don't want to look outside, I just want to be more productive on the computer and shitpost faster

As of next year there will be more F35's than F22s.

Murica stronk and all that.

You dont know how UAVs work do you?

Nope. Pick one

If you're implying the use of remotely piloted aircraft as fighters / air superiority / anything other than COIN, you're not too smart.

>>
>>28288707
yeah, usually with such a large project with so many things that can go wrong, its interesting seeing the deliveries go according to the estimate
>>
>>28289091
Checking my list of fifth generation fighters the us has roughly 9 times as many operational F-22s as anyone else combined has test and prototype fifth generation fighters.

Literally dozens.

But the F35 doesn't have an internal cannon anon.

>HURR DURR ALL AIRCRAFT WILL ALLWAYS HAVE PILOTS.

Protip, both Russian and American sixth gen aircraft will come in unmanned variants.
>>
>>28289172
I never said that, champ.
>>
>>28289172
Not that guy but the USAF specifically wants a manned aircraft. The USN wants an optionallyammed aircraft, perhaps for low threat environments where a drone can reliably be expected to survive.
>>
>>28288882
Pilot doesn't get information.

Though even that can be remediated; if it really becomes a pain in the ass, by replacing it with a conventional HUD.
>>

fag

>>28289172
And Russian 6th gen will come 30 years after American
>>
>>28289140
except it does
>>
>>28289534
To be fair to the guy you replied to: was that not an issue with the first 35's that came out?

Also, I was under the impression the F22 was the better fighter. Better as in nearly the same as the 35 but with a longer life span. Are not the original 35s reaching the end of their flyable hours?

Looks like the new Liberal government in Canada has changed their mind about "no F-35"

>Canada’s Liberal government was explicit in its opposition to the Lightning II in the run-up to the October election, with the party’s platform declaring, “We will not buy the F-35 stealth fighter-bomber”.

>Sajjan indicated that the new government would not actively block the F-35 from participating.

>“The question always comes up about whether it’s F-35 or another type of aircraft,” he says. “This is not about the F-35. My mandate and my role is about replacing the F-18.

Naw, China's going to eat the Russian market for the cheap alternative to American equipment and Russian aerospace will fold.

Everyone without their head up their ass knew that was coming, Canada would be foolish to bail on the F-35.

Impressive
>>
>>28288858
It's not like flying a jet in a dogfight doesn't cause motion sickness or anything.
>>
>>28289791
>BUH BUH I don't need a competent fighter just something that can fly for 4000 miles.
