Bakelite was developed by Belgian-born chemist Leo Baekeland. It's one of the first plastics to be developed. It's a thermosetting resin usually used to impregnate wood (or asbestos) fibers. Fairly easy to mold and strong once set, which is why it quickly took off. It was fairly light for its strength.
Good at insulating electricity and to some extent heat.

Infusing wood was done to increase volume at a low cost. The wood chip texture also increased strength in some cases.
Infusing asbestos was done to provide even better insulation.
There are many variations.
