So, why didn't Syria use its S400's systems today?

It's the 5P85SE2 variant on a MAZ chassis. More commonly on the BAZ chassis, but in effect they are the same.

Covers 400 KM. They were deployed about three years ago.
The first ring on the top is where they are currently deployed. The bottom ring shows what coverage would be with another system in Damascus.
This has been not necessarily a game changer for US strategy, but is part of the reason why we're not going to see many more Turkey incursions of Syria--and possibly Iraqi-- air space in the foreseeable future unless Erdogan wants to play chicken.

Russia will let Israel bomb the fuck out of Hezbollah inside Syria. Plus you forget that Israel lets Russia fly over its air space to bomb ISIS (and the FSA).
And even if they hated each other. If Russia shoots down an Israeli jet... then what? Israel are very good at SEAD and jamming. Yea, Israel would lose some aircraft but the Russian base would be turned into a crater and wouldn't be able to send help.

Cover's the physical range of the missiles, but the detection and targeting range is entirely dependent on a laundry list of factors. Weather, jamming, stealth, fuckup RADAR operators, ect.
