Brand new barrel from factory, I cleaned the bore like any other new gun. HOLY SHIT it was dirty, like, filthy. The first few dry patches were coming out black. Not dark grey. 100% black as black gets. Got it wet wet with oil, then bore brushed, and dry again, until dry patches came out white. I cringe at the thought of shooting a new gun before cleaning it. Every firearm I've bought new was dirty to some degree but this thing was bad. And it was a different sorting of packing grease lube that I've seen before. Weird stuff.
>>
>>28260821
I imagine it's due to test firing (obviously).
>>
Yeah, every brand new gun I've bought had a dirty barrel.

Don't know why, even high-end guns like my Benelli Ethos and Pardini GT9 had shit in their barrels. It probably has something to do with the shitty factory lube most places use.
>>
By the way, pic is not mine. The stuff was a thin grease, no rough feel to it at all. Black as tar.

Went through about 50 patches
>>
>>28260821
Yes as they should be. The company's making sure they work
>>
>>28260821
Factory oil, text firing, and sitting in a warehouse for years must accumulate a lot of shit relax man, this is normal.
>>
That's the break in oil, you are supposed to leave it until you shoot at least 100 rounds. It seasons the barrel.
>>
I figured they should be oiled from factory, or greased. They don't know if the gun will go in an avid shooters hands soon, or if it will sit on a shelf collecting moisture day on day out for 5 years before being sold
>>
>>28260862
>Went through about 50 patches
do you only use patches? did no one tell you that brushes and bore snakes exist?
>>
>>28260882
I have brushes. I used a brush several times (read OP again) My bore snake is packed full of gunk and is worthless. Patches are my fav to use.

>>
>>28260879
Bitch it isn't a steak! Get out of here with that fudd lore. It's storage grease+ dust/dirt and maybe a hint of carbon if they test fired it at the factory.
>>
OP here, my Savage did have some grease that, in the manual, says to leave on
>>
>>28260959

Not that kind of seasoning, you idiot. It's like seasoning a cast iron pan. Fuck, why do I eve waste my time. Enjoy your lower barrel life.

>>28260977
Exactly.
>>
>>28260900
You know you have to clean the boresnake, right?
>>
>>28261051
exactly. that's why i rather just spend more time with patches
>>
>>28261066
Just throw it in the washing machine, bro. You might want to use a mesh bag though, that's what I do.
>>
>>28260900
how the fuck did you use 50 patches though? when I bought my mosin from a guy that didn't clean it basically ever, I didn't even use that many.
3-4 patches came out black, and I think I ended up using about 8 total.
>>
>>28261087
>lead and copper fouling is now in every subsequent wash of clothes
Christ, I don't even wash my range clothes in the washing machine, much less a bore snake.
>>

>>

it's going to be fucking hilarious if he talks about plated or treated barrels.

>lemme just season this melonited barrel right here. i'll put it next to the CMV one.
>>
>>28260821
The only factory firearm I have ever bought that had a clean barrel was an EAA SAR B6P, which showed no signs of in-house testing with live ammo.

I had a Mossberg that had a patch run through it, but it was still oiled. I would be more worried about a clean bore than a slightly dirty one.
>>
>>28261096
His mom washes his clothes, that's why he does not understand how a washing machine works.
>>
>>28261096
I didn't mean with your clothes, you ass. Just wash boresnake(s) alone.

Nevermind, that's not what you meant, I can't into reading comprehension. That said, I haven't had that problem.
>>
>>28261159
LMFAO
>Aw, fucking /k/! Now my clothes are all stained...
>>
Yup
Every new gun I've gotten has been dirty.

I always strip and thoroughly clean every one before ever taking them to the range.
>>
>>28261095
> I think I ended up using about 8 total.
How? All my new guns I cleaned up never got "white" clean patches. I used up over 30 patches and it still had some coloration that was different from just getting wet with Slip2000.
>>
>>28260821
My FNX barrel had the same thing. The manual says it's long-term storage grease, and says to remove it thoroughly and re-lube before firing the gun for the first time.
>>
>>28261096
>range clothes
God, /k/ is full of fags...
>>
>>28264076
I actually always wear the same shirt (concealment garment) and pair of shorts when I shoot idpa, although they're not unlike any other clothes I wear, and they aren't tactical or anything.

>>28261096
Even if you have a whole wardrobe for just going to the range, why wash them separately?
>>
Thanks /k/. 50 patches is a lot to some of you. You'd probably laugh at the amount of attention a bench rest rifle gets.
>>
>>28261210
Some of us actually know how to use a patch.
>>

That's because bench rifles are pure autism to begin with.

Chrome plating is inherently full of micro cracks.
>>
>>28264845
And steel is sacrificial to chrome, galvanically. The chrome plate in a bore is actually a wear resistant coating, not for corrosion protection.

Nothing I like better than talking metallurgy to strangers, unsolicited, while shitting.
>>
>>28260821
Yeah, test firing, so it's always a good idea to take a new gun home, field strip and clean her up and then use your preferred brand of snake oil lube or grease.

On glocks or stainless barrels, it's less an issue but sometimes with bare steel barrels like my Mossberg 590A1 and my CZ 2075 (for some reason the new CZ 2075 have blackened barrel versus the traditional mirror polish CZ is known for) had nasty brown brass case stain which almost gave me a heart attack for being rust (almost on it's way, bust still just a brass stain) so when vigorous scrubbing with Bore Tech, frog lube and ballistol solvents didn't work, I just busted out a tube of flitz and cleaned the chamber with a Q-tip and OMFG it removed the brass stains in one go of rubbing it down with the q tip and removing the excess.

Once again dirty barrels and stained chambers is first world-er problem, these guns will function and probably kick off the stains with use and routine cleaning with normal CLP, but you know, when you buy a brand spanking new gun, you want it to be shiny and chrome...to journey to Valhalla.
>>
>>28261087
I don't want that shit on my clothes, especially my boxer briefs and have lead particles being pressed into my thin ball sack skin and piss hole!

I suppose if I was swag rich enough, I'd have another large washer machine and sink on the far end of the garage for dirty contaminated shit like clothes used when working on a car or my guns.

In fact that, is now my new goal in life, to build a small shower, sink and washer machine room off to the side of my garage for cleaning my work junk.

I work as an electronics mech at an army depot, I solder constantly and work near the booth where they paint shelters. Lead poising and buildup across a period of time is a very real and serious concern for me, I avoid exposure in my own time as much as possible.
>>
>>28264273
How do you use a patch properly? I only learned how to use patches from the National Shooting Sports Foundation and shit.
>>
>>28265720
Yeah, shit's real bad. Likely the same reason people have to remove asbestos and shit from their walls.
>>
>>28265755
For one, using the right size is key. It should take effort to push it through the bore. And wrap the patch around the holder, don't just thread it through and call it good. Don't be afraid to scrub the fuck out of the bore with a brush either, don't listen to fudds that say it will fuck it up, this is basic metallurgy that copper/brass is softer than steel which means it won't do shit to it unless it's incredibly warm. Doubly so if it's chrome lined, but don't use metal brushes on bluing.
>>
>>28265787
That's the bad thing about working for the dod, they don't care about the consumer lead and asbestos restrictions, even though the paint military uses is tough and super matte it's lead based but DAMMMMN does it smell good.
>>
>>28265617

Tee hee.

AF 1410 is my favorite aerospace alloy. What's yours?
>>
>>28265797
not the guy you responded to.
I got a little paranoid about brushes, even though I know brass is softer than steel, so I bough nylon brushes. I'll dunk one in solvent and absolutely scrub the fuck out of that barrel, knowing it's doing zero harm to it. That nylon brush soaked in Hoppe's will break up all the black shit and a few patches soaked in Hoppe's will push it all out. Then a couple of dry patches, then an oil patch and all done.

Of course I take different measures if copper fouling is present, but I haven't had that problem too many times.
>>
>>28265797
Not him,
>mfw I just cut up old shirts to a size that fits the barrel tightly and push it through
I use my sks cleaning rod to force fabric through my P226 barrel. I don't even have a 9mm brush yet.
>>

> And wrap the patch around the holder, don't just thread it through and call it good
Sounds like a plan. Or should I wrap the patch around a brush or the soft head and not the small thread tip?

What? Thread the patch through this and then wrap it around.
>>
>>28261116
You...don't exactly understand what they mean by "seasoning" a pan, do you?

The idea is that you let the carbon build up to form a protective layer. Counter-intuitive, I know but as long as you're thorough the carbon layer is air and water tight and doesn't react with the steel in any meaningful way.

>>28266238

Oh now I know what I was doing wrong. I just threaded the shit through.
>>
>>28266238
Or better yet, get a jag.
>>
>>28266302
That requires you to have one in every size and doesn't leave room for the patch to compress and get into the grooves. This method is optimal.
>>
>>28266002
How do you know if a barrel has copper fouling?
>>
>>28266388
By checking.
>>
>>28266388
visual. you can see the copper all up in there.
>>
>>28266388
Copper tends to oxidize green so if you wipe the barrel with soft cloth and get bits of green you know there's copper bits on the inside.

Ironically, this actually protects the barrel from corrosion since copper is more reactive than steel but since copper rusts into this tough green stuff it has to go if you plan to actually, y'know, shoot the gun. Bits of it will scrape on the inside of the barrel if you don't have a tungsten lining.

For real bro! I don't know how many times I've unloaded my gun for cleaning then started to look down the barrel and all of a sudden a cartridge materializes right there in the chamber. Sometimes I'll have to clear out 30 or 40 materialized rounds before it stops.
On the plus side, free ammo is pretty sweet.

I work at an army depot, I see first hand what years of lead, asbestos, trichloroethylene, dust from the sand box, DU, on and on and on. There was a time when they would just get all waste from the depot and burn it on a big pile every day, The guys that did that job for a few years are almost all dead, part of the depot is a Superfund site, bone cancers are off the chart, few of them make it to retirement or last very long after (what a lucky ass wind fall for the government am I right?). I knew a guy through the union who about a year after retirement broke a bone and nearly died from lead poisoning, as a result of releasing all at once 30+ years of lead build up in his bones.

I didn't take it seriously until some of the old guys set me straight, let these dumb fucks play superman one day they'll be dying in agony a burden on everyone around them and fucking wonder why they didn't take simple precautions to avoid lead.

I've had friends complain that their jags suck. When I asked to see their equipment (no homo), it turned out they were trying to shove a 2 inch patch down a .22 barrel. When you use the right size patch, a jag does a much better job of pushing crud out.
