Marx was talking about the WORKERS being armed. Which sounds a lot like "the people" until you marinade in marxist theory for a while, where they have special definitions for everything.
In socialism, the workers "own" everything. So try going to a socialist country and cutting through the bread line and taking what you want. You have rights as a class, but not as individuals.
In a capitalist country, the working class must be armed to as to resist the capitalist class. But by that, they mean the workers' representatives, the Revolution. Disarmament of the capitalists and their sympathizers (which in practice means the general public) is to be encouraged.
Once the socialist state is established, the working class is to be heavily armed.... which again means their representatives in the government, and again in practice means disarming everyone else.
Here's the thing: NO left-wing movement recognizes the right to bear arms as a general right of everyone. At best, they'll temporarily honor a right already in place as a political tactic (Bernie Sanders and Howard Dean were pro-gun for exactly as long as they absolutely needed to be... and no longer).
To be fair, socialists don't recognize individual liberties of any kind at all. They believe that rights aren't natural to the universe or God, that they're whatever society happens to agree on at any given moment. And that in truth, the only rights that should be granted are collective rights granted to a class as a whole, and especially to their representatives, organizers, and defenders.

If the CNT was strong enough to fight both fascism, the communist party and the moderates at the same time, that would have far and away been the best thing for it to do, there's no argument about that. But there were certain realities at that time that needed addressing, we all know what happened to the anarchist movement in Spain after Franco was done with it. You have to be realistic about things if you want to actually change reality, and the Spanish Civil War was a war where thousands of people died. I wouldn't exactly consider myself a blue dog democrat. I value individualism, I'm firmly against gun control, but I lean to the left on my social policies (gay marriage, etc.) I'm generally pretty fiscally left-leaning in that I consider corporations to (naturally) be out for their own profits rather than the individual, I'm generally supportive of raising the minimum wage.
I'm somewhat right-leaning on things like immigration (I think that all immigrants should be required to learn the lingua franca, have background checks, etc., but I don't support racial or religion-based discrimination) and institution funding (no private institution should receive public funding, no matter the bias, etc.)

The tragedy of the Left is that while the Right clings to the idea of the past but progresses ideologically, the Left is stuck in every single visage of its past.
Unless you are proposing something radically divergent, like Democratic Confederalism, or a return to solidarity-based Anarchism, you are a Statist in disguise, and ally of the fascists.
I find more commonality with libertarians than with leftists, even though all possible metrics align me to the 'left', because the Left refuses to come up with something new. They refuse to adapt to the reality that for the past two centuries, the great liberating and revolutionary force has been capitalism. The two sound similar, but they're not.
Social Democracy = Capitalism, but with safety nets for the poor and sometimes government provision of some services like Railways.
Democratic Socialism = Worker control/ownership of industries achieved via democratic means instead of via proletarian revolution.
The 'something else' in America's case is just proper social democracy instead of the weird mixed system it has now with half-measures like Obamacare that please nobody.
Americans often call social democracy socialism, but it isn't socialism because it maintains a fundamentally capitalist economy (workers don't own/control industry, shareholders do) then uses tax revenue from it to fund social services.
