> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

Despite Henschel’s victory in the Tiger competition, competitor Porsche had already sunk a significant amount of effort and capital into designing their own version (the VK4501(P)) – to the extent that they were confident enough to initiate production orders to some 90 tanks even before the results of the competition was announced. The Tiger (P)s that were left over were speedily put to use, some serving as a slightly different base for the original Tiger design, but most being fitted with a reinforced superstructure, elongated chassis and the hugely powerful PaK 43/2 8.8 cm L/71 gun. This retrofitting was done by Alkett Works at Berlin-Spandau, wherein a fixed turret was built to accommodate the long gun and the original Porsche engines were replaced by Maybach engines of equivalent power. The vehicle that would emerge, the SdKfz 184, was dubbed the “Ferdinand”. Later, it would earn the name of “Elefant”, joining its brethren in the menagerie of German tanks. The tank destroyer quickly carved out a fearsome reputation for itself; with 200 mm of steel armour on its frontal arc, and weighing over 65 tonnes, it would first see combat at the famed battle of Kursk in May 1943. Superior firepower and staying power were the main qualities of the Elefant, rather than any kind of finesse. By late 1943, Ferdinand units were pulled out of Russia and refitted with maintenance operations and upgrades, including a commander’s cupola and hull machineguns – the lack of which was a key liability during Kursk – and later defend against the Soviet counteroffensives.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
The Ferdinand was a potent vehicle, but as was the case with a fair few of the Wehrmacht’s heavier automotives, constantly let down by its utter lack of mobility; that said, its overall range was 150 km on a full tank, putting it far ahead of similarly roled vehicles like the Jadgpanther. The gun depression of the cumbersome L/71 and the fixed placement of the turret were key issues that led to many Elefants being incapacitated by faster moving Soviet tank groups and anti-tank weapons, without the opportunity for a commensurate reply by the Elefant’s powerful gun. The armour of the Elefant seems to have held up, as a large number of the Elefants present during the opening days of Kursk were abandoned rather than outright destroyed – nevertheless, a number of Soviet tankers including SU-152 crewmen reported kills on Elefants at several junctures during the battle. The lack of meaningful anti-personnel capability on the Elefant was also a problem, particularly during the heaviest moments of Kursk, although this was somewhat mitigated by the addition of a 7.92 mm MG34 in the hull in late war rebuilt vehicles – precisely 48 were modified in this manner.
In the end, a key lesson to take away is never compromise on the strategic mobility of an AFV in the event of a ground war spanning a large, open front, nor should tactical considerations be ignored for the sake of a single outstanding capability – in this case, it was Hitler’s agitation for the deployment of Elefants to the Eastern Front as soon as possible that led to ambiguous battlefield results.

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense has announced the transfer of more unspecified Armoured Fighting Vehicles from Bulgaria to Iraq. Social media has corroborated that the transfer includes BMP-1 Infantry Fighting Vehicles and T-72 Main Battle Tanks, both of which are Russian derived designs.
In addition, the Czech firm Excalibur has also delivered 45 BMP-1 IFVs to the Iraqi government. Furthermore, the firm has also reportedly delivered T-72s and other vehicles to the Iraqi government in a series of unspecified deals.
Lithuania as of last week has selected the ARTEC Boxer 8x8 Infantry Fighting Vehicle for its armed forces. The German consortium has confirmed the sale of 88 Boxer vehicles, 84 of which are in an IFV configuration and 4 of which are command post variants. All vehicles are expected to be delivered by the end of 2019.
The Ukrainian Morozov Bureau (KMDB) BTR-4 has been recently spotted in use in North-Eastern Nigeria through online snapshots. The BTR-4Es allegedly ended up in Nigerian hands following a refusal from the Iraqi government to purchase the BTRs and were hence rerouted to Nigeria.
Slovenia’s Valhalla Engineering Group has showcased a conceptual mockup of a new Remote Weapon Station design. The ODIN KM 570 can reportedly mount a Bofors 57 mm cannon with 5.56 or 7.62 mm machineguns in a completely enclosed and power-operated turret,

And that’s all for now.

I don't know what the 2S19 lacked that the Koalitsiya has, but in general things that can always be improved...

More storage space

Upgraded aiming systems
Upgraded defensive systems
Better armor
And so on.

Quite related and nice enough to warrant a repost here: Saudi Arabia is looking for 250 new MBTs and seems to have been impressed enough with the UAE Leclercs in Yemen to obtain a demonstration of the MBT despite the fact that the assembly line is in cold storage. Such an order would hasten and cheapen the upgrade program of the french Leclercs as well so there would be an industrial point for the frogs to do so if it ever happens. Despite the fact that Leo 2 seems to be the most probable choice, source blog is as reliable as reporters can be, so at least there is some truth behing it.

Looking at this tank there seems nothing Russian (Soviet) about it. The hull seems like a work of art but the turret I just don't get. It doesn't seem to have any armor. I know the turret is crewless but still it just seems like anything will go through it. It the turrent a place holder for now? That would be my guess that having a smaller turret on this large hull will accommodate larger turrets with larger guns.

Any news on this or sources?

I speculate that they'll end up using the original Object 187 turret, which is a lot more conventional "clamshell" shaped.

Where would one go if he was in search of technical documents for the Renault FT-17? I'm specifically looking for schematics. It is my life-long dream to build a fully functioning replica before I die. Simple Google searching has only come up with line silhouettes. Those WOULD be useful if they had dimensions, but none do. Anyone care to help a fellow tread head out?

On a similar note, what do you guys think would be the most difficult part of the build? Me personally, either crafting and fitting custom replica tracks, or creating and retrofitting a transmission and gearbox to a modern engine. Because unless I can find a genuine intact FT-17 engine, I'll be using a modern one of a similar power. I'll probably stick with a modern motor, simply due to that, when I'm done, I'd want to donate it to a museum that does driving shows like Bovington.

Sturmpanzer IV "Brummbär" - the original purpose of the StuG III was very similiar to the designated main purpose of the Sherman, namely being a support vehicle for the Infantry whenever they encounter any form of resistance they can't instantly deal with and where calling in Artillery to advance further would take too long for (correct me if I'm wrong).

Since more and more StuG IIIs were put into a Tank Destroyer role, the need for a new Sturmgeschütz arose - and was fulfilled by the Sturmpanzer IV. Its 15cm Howitzer was strong enough to make a building collapse within 2-3 shots.

And when you had a job that a bear couldn't do, you'd get a tiger - the Sturmtiger, that is. Equipped with a mortar that was originally meant to be used by U-boats to bombard coastlines, this thing fired 345kg heavy grenades up to 5.6 kilometers away.

This is one of only 18 ever built.

Pictured together with the ammunition of its 8.8cm KwK 43L/71, the Tiger Ausf. B (as it was officially called by the Wehrmacht) weighed in at almost 70 metric tons and was very well armored with its thick, sloped glacis.

You mean Zimmerit anti-magnetic paste? They stopped applying it to tanks in autumn of '44 due to concerns that hits could ignite it. While this was proven to be untrue, the order was still kept in place - applying Zimmerit added quite some days of workload to the production of a vehicle, so it makes sense in that regard.

Lockheed Martin believes that this previously undisclosed data would have materially affected the case, including the testimony and cross examination of government witnesses,” the source said. “[But] Lockheed Martin was notified by the GAO that no additional hearings would be conducted, no extension of the deadline would be granted, with the results that the decision would have not taken into account the additional data.”

MRAP and Humvee/JLTV fill different roles.

MRAP is built for COIN, which involves mostly patrolling in an IED heavy environment. Therefore it emphasized blast protection and armor.

The Humvee and JLTV are built to be general purpose motor vehicles, essentially updated Jeeps, doing everything that a military need a vehicle for. Therefor it emphases modality, multi-use functionality and cost.

> The Humvee and JLTV are built to be general purpose motor vehicles, essentially updated Jeeps, doing everything that a military need a vehicle for.

Humvees are, but the JLTV are a cross between a Humvee and an MRAP but can’t do either’s job worth a shit, as they have a minuscule cargo capacity compared to a Humvee yet insufficient armor protection when compared to an MRAP.

The JLTV is the worst of both worlds and will require the retention of both the Humvee and MRAP, thus making the JLTV a waste of tax payer money.
>>
>>28267272
The JLTV is the Army's recognition that the Humvee is absolute shit for combat duties, even when uparmored. The Humvee is absolute shit. Now, the JLTV is more designed for that. It's designed to be a mover of troops who could be taken under fire. The Humvee simply does not perform that role adequately. But, it still does do the role of moving things around when not in danger just fine. MRAPs will not be really required. You can see them already being gotten rid of.

> The JLTV is the Army's recognition that the Humvee is absolute shit for combat duties, even when uparmored

No, Humvees are shit vs IED landmines but up-armored Humvees are valid light combat vehicles.

> MRAPs will not be really required. You can see them already being gotten rid of.

Yes, because insurgents have forgotten what IEDs are and the U.S. will never have to deal with insurgents again anyways…

The JLTV program is just another welfare scheme by the Military-Industrial Complex and their lackeys in D.C., where tax payers are soaked for some gee-wiz weapon system that isn’t as good as what we already have and have already paid for.
>>
>>28267520
>The Humvee is absolute shit.

Humvees are great when you don't force them into a role they were never meant for (IED heavy COIN patrols).

The L-ATV is downscaled MRAP as a replacement for uparmored Humvees which were never designed to take that extra weight.
>>
>>28267647
Do you really think MRAPs are suitable for use outside of COIN patrols? They are not a general purpose combat vehicle.
>>
>>28266384
How did the armor on the A7V hold up against the MK IV?
>>
>>28268666
doubtful they ever met in combat
>>
>>28269953
But in terms of their respective gun capabilities and plate thicknesses?
>>
>>28270063
Both of them were only armored to resist rifle and machine gun fire. Any cannon fire easily penetrated.
>>
>>28270340
I've read first hand accounts of British tankers in 1918 that say that even machine gun fire and rifle fire in the thinner parts of the armor created massive amounts of spalling and exterior shrapnel, which could be pretty dangerous to the crewmen and infantry in close support respectively.

Neither is the JLTV, nor is it as useful as existing MRAPs in counter insurgency operations, hundreds of which are just sitting parked in the desert or being given away free to other countries...
>>
>>28267647
IED's is not even an insurgent thing
Any war can/will have a guerrilla element, so you are going to end up with logistics units getting ambushed/IED'd.

Humvee is not suitable for anything other than peacetime operations
In which case you could just buy a commercial truck

They definitely did meet for the first tank battle. There were losses both sides and it was the MkIV Male that did all the work.

So the T-90's basically just the T-72 chassis... it also has the bottom escape hatch close by the driver, right? Any escape hatch info in terms of the Armata? And aren't bottom hatches really bad against mines?
>>
>>28272543
The main advancements of the T-90 are mostly evident on the turret itself, especially in the unconventional shape and the higher tech doodads on it.
As for the escape hatch, literally no one outside of Russia knows, but I would doubt it, because as you said, it would compromise a lot of its resilience against mines.
>>
>>28267647
What is thatt arm thing on the side for?
>>

It's an articulated arm for ordnance disposal.

Do you have another source? The page, probably because Wikipedia, doesn't mention tanks at all.

Yes, they create a weak spot that's likely to give way in case of a detonation.

T-72BU

>Shtora-1

T-90A
>new turret, Ob 187 turret
>thermal camera, latter model have French made thermal camera
>1000 hp engine
>>
>>28272543
>aren't bottom hatches really bad against mines
They can be, the Chieftain was horrifically bad because the escape hatch opened INWARDS.

AFAIK T-72/90 escape hatch opens outwards, which would prevent it just being blown inwards like the Chieftain's.
>>
>>28273656
>T-72/90 escape hatch opens outwards
The escape hatch on the M-60 also opens outwards.
>>
>>28273675
So does the one in Leo1, thank fuck. I am unfamiliar with the M-60, but when I learned the Chieftain's opened inwards I could barely believe it.
>>
>>28272543
>>28272937
>>28273402

All T-64, T-72, T-80, T-90 have escape hatch just behind driver seat, but as drivers compartment is already quite cramped and opening is small you must be quite nimble and slim to use it. Other crew members can also use this hatch.

Unlike Abrams, driver can also escape through the turret if turret is facing forward, but if Abrams is traversed forward the driver is completely trapped!

From 1999 upgraded T-72B have improved mine protection by slightly thicker escape hatch (thicker than rest of hull floor) and additional amour inside vehicle directly under driver.

>>28273560

840hp V-84 common to all T-72B models.

all models of T-90A have ESSA sight with french thermal camera.

>>28273656

Yes, T-64/72/80/90 escape hatch open outward, it drops to floor once 4 latches are released.

Has this photo of the E-100 been artificially coloured? I've not seen it published in black and white anywhere else, but it all being in red oxide just doesn't seem likely to me, popular as it is among some modellers.
>>
>>28274870
colour modification.
>>
>>28274870

its accurate, red oxide is the standard colour of the factory basecoat primer of all german WW2 vehicles

its called "Rotbraun"
>>
>>28275046

While that's true in itself, they were usually quick to give a yellow coat as that's more hard wearing and safer, as I thought the primer was toxic to handle. Given how long the E-100 was sitting around being built and the chassis being mostly finished and awaiting a turret and tracks, I think it likely to have been coated in yellow. B&W photos are not clear, the E-100 looks lighter in some and dark in others, but darker photos would suggest red primer.

Remember that its engine is no longer in production.
>>
>>28264301
where the fuck did he go. Have him in subscibed list for youtube for years but then couldnt find him
>>
>>28277192
Keep it essentially the same. New engine, new electronics, capability to add ERA or an APS. And that's essentially it. Really, the design is solid. If you REALLY wanted to, up the gun to the 120 like the one demonstrator.

Another possibility is that the ammunition load is too small for what the Army has in mind, which would be a major problem design wise. You'd have to enlarge the thing, which means more weight, which is a no-no. Other possible solutions... Perhaps replace the loader with an autoloader and shove more ammunition in? Perhaps some kind of turret bustle filled with more ammunition?
>>
>>28277975
It already has an auto-loader tho.
>>
>>28278034
Is it? I coulda sworn it was a human loader. Mea culpa.
>>
>>28277192
New generation optics and electronics, APS maybe.

New engine since the original engine isn't in production.

Nothin much beyond that, seems like a solid design and I beleive it passed army trials and the only reason it didn't enter service is the fact that it's budget was suddenly cut to save money for other things.

Now that the Army has reopened the requirement for such a vehicle I don't see why they would just take a modernized version of a vehicle they already know works.

>>
>>28279162
You mean they need something that can be transported easily enough as to not impact the mobility of an IBCT?

Nah fuck logic, they should be issued Abrams.
>>
>>28279276
Extremely inefficient to be flying shit like tanks around, when they can be loaded on boats & shipped.
Would be far more cost effective to develop nuclear powered cargo ships that can cruise at 30+ knots.

>>28279332
So build a 35-40 ton AFV on the abrams chassis
problem solved.
Not a 20 ton light tank with less protection than a stryker

Probably one of those RUAG low recoil 120mm guns, the question is how would it effect the ammunition loadout (105mm NATO rounds actually have longer cases than 120mm).
>>
>>28279362
>So build a 35-40 ton AFV on the abrams chassis

There goes the mobility of an IBCT.

>Not a 20 ton light tank with less protection than a stryker

By less protection you mean between equal protection to a Stryker and equal protection to a A3 Bradley.

Can you guarantee you will always have ocean access?
>>
>>28279444

Really, the concept of a "light infantry" IBCT shouldn't exist.

>>28279459
If you don't have ocean access then you seize ocean access. Such as when Iran was invaded in WW2.
