Although I try to buy small stuff at mom & pop stores, they often gouge far too much for ammo and new firearms (sometimes used can be found for a decent price). If I can find a gun for over 100 dollars less before tax online, I'll simply have it transferred instead

Depends on what I'm shopping for. If it's a gun, I only ever buy in-person so I can handle it, break it down, and inspect it before I buy. If it's ammo, again in person because shipping costs suck for "Dangerous Materials".
If it's parts or accessories, then it's okay to buy online since LGSs won't or can't necessarily carry the components you're looking for.
