I'm not really a modern bolt action guy but you'll probably be satisfied with a ruger american or one of savage's offerings. they're functional and utilitarian rifles.
I'd recommend .308 (cheap ammo), 30-06 (can be and is loaded much hotter then .308, great for reloaders) or .270 win (has a large cult following and good ballistics but is the most expensive of the three by a slim margin) in the end, do your own homework. you'll end up learning a lot more about what you actually want out of your rifle as you research.
