What are some of your favorite documentaries/tv specials about modern Middle Eastern affairs? I've seen a few of the ones they show on the Military channel constantly, as well as Restrepo (Haven't seen Armadillo but I plan to), The War Tapes, and episodes of Shootout. More interested in ones about the military rather than political affairs.

I've tried to watch Restrepo about 5 times now over the course of a year or so. Every time I start it, I get about 10 mins in and I have to turn it off.
I did a tour in Iraq, and it just puts me in a bad place seeing the uniforms, the sounds, vehicles the people, etc.
I can watch WWII docs, WWI docs, Civil War docs, Vietnam docs all day long (and often do) and be ok, but Iraq War docs I never seem to be able to watch them. Some I have gotten through, and it always leaves me in a bad spot but then watch an episode of Simpsons or something afterwards and I'm ok.
But Restrepo, I just can't get past that first 10min because it brings back so many memories so fast. I really want to watch it, I feel like I need to. It's just hard seeing it on a TV screen after living the misery and the pain.

Tried watching it, but the hokey gung-ho soundtrack and narrator put me off.

This is What Winning Looks Like is good. One of the few Vice pieces I liked.

Najibullah Quraishi did two really good documentaries about Afghanistan. One about the Taliban and one about bacha bazi.
>>
>>28072293
GOOD NEWS! Restrepo is filmed in Afghanistan so you should have no problem watching it.
>>
The Restrepo "sequel"/followup Korengal is definitely a good choice too.
>>
>>28072293
the pain is from the fact you haven't truly accept that our occupation of iraq and afghanistan have been all for nothing and the service which you have been brainwashed to feel pride in has done nothing to defend freedoms.
>>
>>28072125
Restrepo and it's follow up Korengal are fucking excellent, that young bloke who just pretty much admits he doesn't want to live anymore fucking got me.

Sebastian Junger did another doco with two of the guys from restrepo, they walk through the US and just talk about their problems, pretty good.

Hornet's Nest is badass. Korengal and Restrepo are great too.

is there anything like a documentary on middle easter conflicts from a jihadi perspective? seeing firefights and bombings from the other side would be really interesting

Probably, but maybe not in English. There's a nice documentary about the hind on YouTube that's stealth about the afghan-Soviet war and it had dudes from both sides talking about their experiences. I'll link it for you when I get home if ou want.

Not exactly Middle East, or jihadi, but that's the closest I know of.
>>
>>28074493
why would you want to watch that? it'd be just like female pov porn where 95% of it ends with the girl's face getting creamed on, except instead of warm goo it's a $200,000 jdam...gets boring after a while imo
>>
just a couple I liked not yet mentioned: The Fighting Season, Inside Combat Rescue, Fighting on the Frontline(britbongs), Tell Spring Not to Come This Year

My old roommate said one of his former Drill Sergeants is in that. Can't remember who it was though.

to be honest, I agree. I didn't fight for freedom, maybe some Iraqi's freedom would have came from it, but I don't pretend to have fought for American freedom, only American interests (which were bullshit). The REAL reason I fought was for my friends next to me, and to remove kebab. I did remove kebab. My friends removed kebab.
The invasion of Iraq was a giant mistake, Afghanistan has been a failure. I get it, guy. Not all of us fell for it (in fact most of us knew it was bullshit, at least in my unit which was outside the wire every day), even while we were in. I knew that when we left Iraq, it would eat it self alive and my officers said "no we are building them back up! they will last!". Nothing makes me cringe more than when I hear another Veteran say "I fought for your freedom" or something like that, heard it a lot in classes at college from non-combat MOS's. We did however serve our country, only to be misused.
The pain comes from my friends being killed or injured. All for a bullshit cause.

So no, I wasn't "brainwashed" to feel pride in anything. I only feel pride for what I saw brave men do under fire.

“Flush out your headgear, new guy. You think we waste gooks for freedom? This is a slaughter. If I’m gonna get my balls blown off for a word, my word is poontang.”

You don't have to justify yourself or apologize to that asshole. All soldiers who demonstrate courage, honor, loyalty, and basic moral decency in battle are heroic, no matter what else might be said of the conflict. You're entitled to your pride because you earned it.
>>
>>28074770
theres a lot more to it than that, what i'd mainly be interested in seeing is how the fighters feel about eh conflict themselves, are they in on all teh ideology or just fighting because its the only job they can find, do they experience the same kind of stress issues as western troops do, do they feel regret about killing or do they completely dehumanize their enemy.

not only that if you look at movies like das boot which were amazing precisely because they used suspense so well, theres no reason the same thing couldnt be done watching some afghan goat herders hide from what might be a high flying hawk, or a drone.

though at the same time i dont think these regions have a wealth of talented film directors
>>
>>28074770
and between each IED they set, they shit and wipe their ass with their bare hand, then wash off with water (if they have any). Then they go back to their cave or village and rape little boys (chai boys). Right before they beat their wife and also fuck their goats.
Not my cup of tea (pun) to be honest family.
