Is/was the P08 Luger really that great of a pistol or does its popularity stem purely from meme magic?
>>
>>28069371
The popularity in the US might stem from how much GIs liked to collect them during the war
>>
>>28069386
This reminds me, anyone got the pic of some retarded anon on here a few years back that destroyed his grandfather's Luger war trophy with steel wool because he was a fucking idiot?
>>
>jammomatic piece of garbage
Haha, no. Neat collector's piece though
>>
meme magic but its a great meme
>>
>>28069416
>Luger
>Jammomatic

Obviously never shot a Luger. I once took both my Luger and my dad's original Colt M1911 to the range together. The Luger ran fine and the M1911 had crap tons of failure to loads.

>>

It has a very unique and ingenious design. Obviously it is not the greatest EDC pistol of all time (which is gold plated deagle duh), but it has character and is a piece of history.
>>
>>28069371
It was mostly do to the fact it was one of the first semi-auto pistols, which of course at it's time made it very popular. It was also cheap enough to mass-produce, unlike the C96.

Sure hope you weren't using hollowpoints

For 1898 the Luger was an amazing sidearm.
>>

>original M1911

Yeah that would do it. Early and war production 1911s tended to be loose and fairly unreliable, I'm waiting for 1911s to get tremendously shit on when poorfags start buying old ones from the CMP

RIA is the absolute lowest end you should buy, and even then will take some polishing to get it to run smoothly. Ruger SR1911 is next step up, then Colt

> It was also cheap enough to mass-produce
It wasn't cheap at all to produce. In fact it cost around the same to produce a Luger as it did a C-96.

Nope, I had FMJs in it. They all kept getting hung up on a loading ramp. It was also inaccurate as hell and couldn't hold a group, but I put that down to a probable worn out barrel bushing.

This is essentially the Pistole Parabellum shooter's gospel. By far most malfunctions are related to the magazine or magazine spring. Second culprit is the mainspring.
>>
>>28070244
I just prefer originality. especially on a gun I'm not going to shoot that often. If I want a M1911 to shoot I'd get a WWII production 1911A1; Remington, Colt, Ithaca, Union Switch & Signal, no Singer though too rare and expensive. Probably try to find a US&S because of the relation to trains.
>>
>>28070392
Never fired or touched but have seen one in person at Springfield armory museum for whatever thats worth. I wanted to play that recent game purely because you get one. It's pretty massive.
>>28070080
>>28070541
Does shoot hot enough ammo still apply?
>>
>>28070541
It is also picky about ammo. I shot several boxes of Federal ammo just fine out f mine but it didn't like 115gr Winchester white box. Now I just reload all my 9mm to original German military pistol spec and it works fine.
>>
>>28069371
They were extremely good for 1908 (technically even 1900). Your alternatives at the time were either revolvers (many of which were by then pretty good too), the Borchardt, the under-powered Browning 1900 or some goofy clip-loaded Austrian automatics. By contrast the Luger was pretty powerful and very refined. It was durable enough, reliable enough and still is extremely nice to shoot. By modern standards almost any Browning-style locked-breech recoil-actuated automatic is far cheaper, simpler and more reliable, more importantly most of them have nearly double the magazine capacity and can handle +P ammunition as well as hollow-points. Then again it is 2015 and no shit we made some progress over the years.

No, it never really did.

What specs are you using? I found it notoriously difficult to find actual German military documentation of velocity. 123.5gr @ 1072-1082 FPS was the issued load.

>>28070613
38lbs is the standard weight. If you are having feeding issues, more often than not your magazine is to blame.

not the magazine, I swapped between the one I got with it and my DWM in .30 luger which fires perfectly, same thing
>>
>>28070941
The Polte drawings have some info on German loads.
A Russian book "Construction of Ammunition" actually has a tonne of information on the different cartridges of the WW2 era.
>>
>>28070941
>notoriously difficult to find actual German military documentation of velocity

I found the same thing. Took a fair amount of digging around to find the info I wanted since 9mm is pretty much the most popular handgun cartridge out there so the load data is pretty much endless. But in the end I'm using a I found data pretty much matching what you have there and am using a 124gr bullet and Alliant Power Pistol powder to get it to that velocity. I forget the amount of powder since it's in my book in the basement.
>>
>>28070980
What type of feeding issue is it having? Not picking up the next round, the round nosing against the top of the chamber? Sometimes worn mag catches can cause these issues as well.

>>
>>28070555
how do you defend that shit and not simply go
"oh, maybe hes right, I can swap some stupid spring"

tripfags tho
>>
>>28071238

not ejecting the spent casing, and when it does, nose of the next round sticking to the top of the chamber
>>
>>28070555
If you shoot it at all with worn springs you risk eventually damaging it.

If it is ever going to be shot, replace the springs. Otherwise, spare it.
>>

It's not even that hard to follow, but you'll still see people complaining about their P-08s having consistent feeding issues. Geesh.

I still feel a slight flutter in my jaded /k/ heart when old German pistols are the topic of discussion.
>>
>>28071494
>>28071401
I'm first and foremost a collector, then a shooter. Originality is what I like. And trust me, the M1911 isn't jamming because of weak springs, it jams because it's 98 years old and loose as hell. Like I said, if I really wanted to shoot it I'd need to get a new barrel bushing and new barrel. It's value and rarity is that it's a straight 1911 not an A1. And anybody who has shot a straight M1911 can tell you they are a little bit of a pain to shoot, literally. The slide and more so hammer like to pinch your skin on recoil. The M1911A1 is a much better shooter. Hence I sad if I want a M1911 to shoot, I'll get a used Union Switch & Signal.
>>
>>28071535
Erfurt and DWM both made LP.08's.

>>28071437
Not ejecting as in stovepipe jamming or not extracting the case from the chamber? If it's not extracting, the extractor nose or spring may be damaged. Stovepipes can also be caused by a damaged extractor, I would check the fired cases closely for damage on the rims.

Rounds that are partially entering the chamber and jamming are often caused by deformed magazine feed lips, weak magazine spring, a damaged magazine catch allowing the magazine to hang too low or occasionally too short cartridge overall length.

This. They were well built at the time/german kraut magic-looking action when fired and only infantry/artillery officers mostly carried them and were only slightly easier to find at the beginning of the war.

The further they pushed towards Germany, the harder they were to find because of the P38 replacements.
