Actually modern thermals can distinguish paper targets easily, and even read the different heat signatures of ink on paper vs just paper from extreme distances.

I couldn't stand the X320 for some reason. Someone showed me one once and an MTM and I vastly preferred the MTM. Something about the X320's ergonomics and lack of any real controls kind of put me off.

You just missed a sale where TNVC was selling the IR Hunter MKII (has a 640 core, twice the specs / 4x the resolution as standard 320 core thermals) where the cheapest one was 1.5x @ 4400. You'll probably have to wait until they run another sale around Christmas? They might not run one however.
The problem with running a 5x optic with minimum mag is you won't get really any thermal that looks good as a clip on in front of it. Even high end ones like the LWTS/T70 are typically optimized for around 4x as a standard. If you want to use your current scope expect to basically use it at 5x power all the time in thermal mode.

They require a large amount of ir light to be able to see anything, and at best you only see a tiny bit better than you would without the goggles
also old russian night vision stuff has a nasty habit of emitting radiation particles, it's not much but having xray injected straight into your eye balls for 8 to 10 hours a night doesn't sound like fun
if it's a casual toy you just want to use for 5-10 minutes to show your friend it could be worth that price they have listed
