Any tips?

Wear square toes a Stetson too.

Honestly, I'd love to see one in a defensive use. I see nothing wrong with the idea

also, are walkers and dragoons better than the 1858 remingtons? cant decide between those for a first BP gun.
>>
>>28059180
My father had a rem 1858. His was in .45Lc though. It was a nice gun.
>>
>>28059180
I'm getting this walker as my first black powder, so I can't really speak to that.
>>

Thats a big iron
>>

That's my gun :D

I figure if i dont hit my target I can retreat behind my smokescreen into the frozen woodlands
>>
I hope your a big guy.
>>

Got a Remington a month ago and I love it. If you can get a 5 1/2 inch barrel version by pietta. The thing actually is manageable to carry at that size and if you feel like it you could chop the barrel and make it a snubnose that's downright sexy.

Who /Arizona Ranger/ here?

Could one easily convert a cap-and-ball revolver to cartridge firing without a conversion kit?

I tried to think about what has to be modified and this is what I could come up with

>make a new cylinder that takes cartridges loaded from the rear (obviously)
>cut a loading gate into the bit behind the cylinder
> make a hammer with a firing pin and swap out the existing one
>attach spring loaded ejector rod to the side of the barrel
>??????
>profit

Anything im missing? Also a .36 calibre 1851 should be able to fire .38 special, since it uses .357 calibre bullets, right?

>Also a .36 calibre 1851 should be able to fire .38 special, since it uses .357 calibre bullets, right?
It would be likely to explode. You'd be firing modern smokeless cartridges in something meant for BP.

>calibre
>re
Ah. I was going to ask why you would go to all that effort, but now it's obvious.
>>
>>28059908
Oh and if you were going to all the effort to fabricate a new cylinder, then you could make yourself a whole new gun and just re use some parts like the hammer etc.

>>

We did it so we could easily identify bonglandians and other loyalists on the internet. We thought of all this shit a couple hundred years ago.
Step your game up.
>>
>>28060026
I would still need a rifled barrel. Could the replica barrel withstand a standard pressure .38 special?
>>
>>28060105
Not a bonglandian. One of bongland's drunken by-blows that seems to be slipping into failed state territory.
>>
>>28060105
Also not a loyalist. My people fought the british empire but had the misfortune to take on 1890s britain not the pussy late 18th century version, also didn't have the french backing us up, like you lot.
>>
>>28060106
Why do you need a rifled barrel? Are you doing target shooting? An unrifled barrel isn't going to send a bullet whizzing off into space at self defense ranges.
>>
>>28060145
Ok point taken. Though hiking into the mountains for some plinking a guinea fowl hunting seems fun

Walkers are cool as all Hell, but when I get a horse pistol, it will likely be a Dragoon. If for no other reason than it has a loading rod latch.

Pretty much what Colt did with their remaining stock of black powder parts in 1872.

This is my Uberti Richards Mason 1851 Navy factory conversion in .38 Special. The original would have been in either .38 Colti Rimfire or .38 Short Colt.
>>
>>28059908
There are a number of ways to convert a black powder to cartridge. None of them are especially cheap. The first is self contained cylinders. These have a firing pin built into each chamber. The best gun to use with these is an 1858 Remington replica for ease of loading.

The second type is the Kirst Konverter (their spelling). It uses a recoil shield/loading gate and a traditional cylinder. It does require the frame to be milled out to clear the loading gate.

Here is a Kirst Konversion on a Uberti Walker.

one interesting development for converted Walkers and Dragoons is the .45 Black Powder Magnum. (.45 BPM) This is basically a .460 S&W Magnum case loaded with Black powder and a soft lead bullet.

.45 BPM can propel a 250 grain lead bullet at 1032 fps for 591 ftlbs. this uses 48 grains of FFG powder. The biggest loads are a 141 grain ball with 60 grains of FFG powder.

Dude walkers are a huge pistol. I think you might do better with a colt navy 1851 navy, 1860 Army, 1858 Remington, in 44. At least they are are not practically a carbine in length.
>>
>>28060106
you do realize companies make 38 special conversion cylinders right?

Is it gonna blow up my gun or cause it to warp the frame?

Does anyone know where I can get a mirwin and hulbert .44-40?

3rd Dragoon owner here btw. Gonna convert it to cartridge soon. Friday is when i make the order.
>>
>>28062062
I'm gonna be wearing it down my chest under a parka, so it'll be pretty comfortably hidden.
>>
>>28059908
>Also a .36 calibre 1851 should be able to fire .38 special, since it uses .357 calibre bullets, right?

The bore is actually .375 or something like that. The original conversions used a heeled bullet.

Already done.
DO NOT USE AMMO THAT EXCEEDS 1000 FT/Second
OP, if the cylinder doesn't have safety nipples carry it with the hammer on an empty chamber.

but i mean, at this point why not just buy a SAA?

Because they don't make Dragoons or Walkers that shoot modern cartridges.

go here and buy old west with modern ammunition.

No one asked for your opinion, pilgrim. Now just mosey on before I deliver one stout punch to your chin and remind your sausage sucker how we kicked and/or saved your ass in the big one and the bigger one.
