Unless I'm missing something it wouldn't work.
If the gun was bought from a shop then there is an obvious paper trail, if from a 3rd party then all you have to do is contact the person from whom you bought it.
The only way it would work is if the person you bought it from turns around and says it was stolen, in which case its your fault for not having some sort of proof of sale.
When you report a firearm as stolen you attach your name to that police report, once they figure out that it was an attempt to steal someone else's gun (which they will) the person who falsely claimed the gun as stolen is getting v& big time.
For these reasons I never blur the sn on pics I upload here, fucking try and report them stolen.

Its pretty easy to tell the difference between a so called "ghost gun" and a gun manufactured by a gun manufacturer.
So what, they use a gun they manufactured with a serial number that belongs to a gun that you own. You'd still own that gun, and even a bottom of the barrel AR lower like Del-Ton or DPMS is gonna look different than an 80% lower built by the same company.
