My personal recommendation would be Bear Mountain are in San Bernardino, best county in regards to firearms friendly, and CCW applications. The mountain range is a good middle range, you got the mojave on one side, some spread out cities on the other, and beyond them, the beach and Pacific. Regular winter snowfall and cool foresty climate, the tourists can be a bitch now and then, but if you're a bit more relaxed and slower paced it's very manageable.

I'm an Oklahoman personally. I live in a town of 4000 people. I can look down one side of my street and see plainsland and cows, and look down the other and see the school I grew up in. There's a gun culture like no other in this place. My neighbors are always showing me their new purchases. I go off shooting in the country, and the local sheriff wants to hear about my Mosin. I go back home to have BBQ in my house I rent for 300 a month.

Stay away from central Alabama. For one, massive black populations, and correspondingly the highest crime rates in the state. Huntsville can be nice, but it's got some bad places too.
Honestly because of Huntsville most of the smaller cities around it are pretty well off. I live in a community of 10k 45 minutes out of Huntsville. One of the best High Schools in the state as well as one of the top schools in the country, nice, affordable houses, cool people. Only problem (which isn't a problem for me personally) is that it's a dry city. Of course, it being dry is why we have lower crime than any city around us.
Avoid Decatur unless you can live in one of its gated communities.

Like I said, it's all about where you are. Those things are true for the real rural areas, but not the cities (except for the big thing, but what place isn't overrun by bugs these days?). Go look up pictures of sorority classes from Alabama, Auburn, GA Tech, and UGA. The majority are average looking or better, with only a few fat or ugly ones. And as for the food, region-specific stuff is things like bbq, every kind of seafood you can imagine, gumbo, casseroles with all kinds of meat and veggies, etc. You can find that deep fried buttery shit anywhere in the world, but as long as you're not poor, you should be able to afford something better. And as for the weather, where I grew up, summers were 80s or rarely 90s (F) and winters were 40s, 50s, and rarely 30s (F).
