The Naxalites have been giving these guys a run for their money for a long time now. I would have blamed that on the fact that the INSAS is the standard service rifle for the Indian Army, but it looks like they're also issued AK-type weapons, too. They must just be shit at fighting communists.

Those helmets looks more snugly fitted than your average PASGT-pattern helmet. Covers the whole cranium without impending vision too.
We really need to get a couple of those and run some ballistic and ergonomic test. The material is probably worse than ECH but the design principle could be adapted for future combat helmet.

The point of the helmet is to guard from shrapnel and direct shots. That is why they do not have a top cover. Also its hot and muggy as fuck in most parts of India so the last thing you want is a solid cover of ceramic over your head.
They do work well enough that they are still standard issue and a decent amount of research went into the design of them.
Honestly the way to look at it is the majority of times someone dies from a head injury is from a frontal hit from either shrapnel or an actual shot. So they made something that takes care of that.

Hmmm, the Indian Army is not involved in fighting the Naxals (if the indian govt calls in the Army they would have to admit there has been a political failure), the indian army does fight the ULFA insurgents in the north east. the CRPF aka the armed police, fights the naxals- and they are mired in a bunch of political organisational problems; also they were never designed to fight insurgencies, they're just a police force. consequently they suck shit cuz lack of political will to fix the problem.
