When I turned 18, I wanted to buy an SKS. My dad insisted I get a bolt action. I ended up buying a bolt action, and kinda wish I had gotten the SKS. I do have semi autos, and love bolt actions, but the SKS was going for ~$300, which was a lot during that time. I say go for it, if you don't have any guns, or don't have an semi autos.

I bought 2 hardwood SKS's from Canadaammo a few weeks ago and they were kind rough when i got them. 1 was a little more beat up that the other with a few nice dings in the stock. Yeah shooting non-restricteds are easy peasy. The vast majorty of land up here is crown land so shooting spots are easy to come by. Within a 5 minute drive of my little town i can be out putting holes in things np. Shooting restricteds is a bit tough though because there aren't many gun clubs but we get by.
