Back in the day of the Soviets the Mig designed planes were all over the place.

These days other then some older then dirt Mig-21s and the occasional Mig-29 you never see them in the airforces of countries. Is there a reason why they are no longer used?

Russia has no shortages of MiGs, although they tend to gravitate towards Sukhoi for Air Superiority fighters.

MiG-23s are fucking everywhere, bro. The MiG-25 has a good amount of foreign operators too.

MiG-29s were supposed to be the "work horse" fighter but overall the Su-27 multi-role variants are better.

25s,31s, and 29s are still pretty widespread i think.

Older MiGs are all over, still. But the design bureaus got merged into a single corporation after the fall of the Soviet Union, and it seems like all the new stuff is being developed under the Sukhoi brand.
>>
>>28014882
>31s
No. Russia is the only operator and they can barely keep any of them flying.

That makes sense. I was referring mostly that we do not have "NEW" MiG designs, but the fact that Russia is using the Sukhoi brand makes a lot of sense.

It's not that simple.

MiG had won a lot of the next-generation fighter contracts (effectively their response to the ATF/F-22) towards the end of the Cold War, but they got fucked when the war ended and their funding dried up. They ended up cancelling the lightweight counterpart to their next-gen fighter before funding dried up altogether and the program ended. The MiG 1.44 was apparently the product of the cancelled next-gen fighter program, but its sole flight in 2000 was little more than a formality. There were a couple of other design programs through the last decade, culminating in the PAK FA contract that Sukhoi won. Sukhoi heads the project, but IIRC work has been split among the different design bureaus to keep them afloat. That doesn't mean MiG's done with fighters just yet. Reportedly MiG's going to manage the lighter counterpart to the PAK FA (think the F-35 to the PAK FA's F-22.)

The lack of "new" MiG designs is largely because the MiG-29 ended up being a massive disappointment. First generation Fulcrums had a pitifully short range and horrific ergonomics (there's stories of pilots being forced to navigate with a giant map in their lap), and they've pretty much always been outpaced by the Flanker. Newer generation MiGs partly address the early Fulcrum's failings, but with the market now saturated with parts for Flankers, there's really no reason to buy a Fulcrum. The only place they've really had success is with the MiG-29K, and that's more because Sukhoi didn't really bother to update the Su-33 once they won the Soviet Navy contract back in the 80's.

Same shit that happened to US... their own version of Lockheed-Martin (i.e. Sukhoi) beat all the other companies (i.e. design bureaus).

Mig-29 was a mistake, that's why. Light fighters are light mostly because they are one engined. They are cheaper, they need less maintenance. They can be used more often that heavy fighters. Mig-29 was so huge that there was no advances over heavy Su-27 series. That was proofed in Eritrean–Ethiopian War war when Su-27s tear apart Migs without losses. Now Migs are bought only to keep factory working.

What of happenings to Skat UCAV?

>Current status[edit]
>As General Director of RSK "MiG" Sergei Korotkov said to the press earlier, the development of Skat was discontinued. By the decision of Russian Defence Ministry Sukhoi Holding became the new Head Developer of the Strike UCAV project. Still, Skat experience would be used by Sukhoi. RSK "MiG" specialists are expected to work in the new project.[citation needed] On 3 June 2013, MiG signed a research and development contract to build a UCAV based on the Skat design.[2]

mig29 was shit and got no export orders

everyone opted for the su30 which brought down prices due to economy of scale and made it the primary 4th gen fighter for russia as well

however they have started producing navalized mig29's for the indian and russian navys
>>
>>28016586
They haven't done much since the 90's when they collaborated with Lockheed to get the Yak-141 running for a couple more years.

More recently, they've worked with Aermacchi to develop a trainer (Yak-130) that actually seems pretty good, but it's hardly enough to keep the company's expertise with combat aircraft going.

It's looking like the Russian aerospace industry is gravitating towards a couple of manufacturers specializing in certain areas.
>Sukhoi, MiG get fighters
>Tupolev gets bombers
>Yakovlev gets trainers
>Ilyushin and Antonov get transports

They also put their eggs in the MiG-35 basket hoping to clinch a large deal with India.

Indian Airforce felt that the design was of last era and not that much different than the Su-27 type Su-30MKI that they already had and weren't happy about servicing on the MiG-29, so they ended up picking up the Rafales.

Now the only customer for them is the RuAF which had taken up minor orders of them as pittance to keep them afloat.

They are rumoured to be working on a light 5th generation multi role fighter. But I doubt they have the funds or engineers left to do it themselves.

Russia is also currently buying the Mig-29K.
>>
>>28020493
Yeah.

Su-33 just didn't make sense for a ramp carrier. It was designed on the assumption that they would switch to CATOBAR at some point, but then funds dried up in the 90s.

MiG 29Ks make a lot more sense for the ramp carriers, but the order is only for ~30 or so units. Not nearly enough to keep MiG afloat. Apparently most of what they do now for business is some relatively shoddy servicing and upgrades.
