wanting to get a rifle (first one, scrub at semi automatic rifles) and the DPMS .308 or AR-10s are catching my eye. I hear they are not the highest quality but they're not all bad, a get what you pay for type thing. should I avoid it or buy one?

The trigger that comes in their Lr-308 model had the same feels as dragging a cinder block across concrete. You basically have to replace it to actually take advantage of its potential

The basic LR308s certainly work, and while likely more accurate than some of the other popular battle rifles due to the inherent accuracy of the stoner design, the cheap LR308s do represent to lower tier of performance you can expect from the platform.

starting point for 308 AR seems to be $900 to $1000 for DPMS Oracles and goes up to $2k+ for HKs, and that doesnt include mags, ammo, and glass

Correction, I would go through Brownells right now for $675. I can't post their link because 4chinz thinks it's spam. Go on their site and find the DPMS Oracle 308 for $749, and use code L3X for 10% more off. Add whatever S&H and transfer fees.
DPMS did a good job with their LR308 platform; that's the reason everyone else started going in their direction for copying the parts commonality. Don't put their AR-15 reputation on their AR-10s.

The LR308 is the only good thing DPMS was ever able to shit out. They're still bottom of the barrel, but they're serviceable.
I will add, now that CMT, PSA, and a few other places are offering AR-10s, it's almost as cheap to build one from those receiver sets as it would be to buy a DPMS.

For budget 308 the PTR91 is the way to go. Because they're a clone, a significant chunk of change is knocked off the price of an otherwise nice ass gun.
With AR-10s and even 308 shooting in general, if you can't safely drop 1500 on the rifle you'll hardly ever shoot. A case of ammo can easily run you 300-400 depending on what you're buying.
Don't think I'm being condescending here but for your budget an AR or AK will offer significantly more shooting (and hence enjoyment) than an AR-10. I'm not saying you *HAVE* to buy boutique brands and have a .01 moa gucci pos, but don't buy shit just to say you have it.
