What's the smallest military unit capable of independent operations? A battalion? A company? A regiment?
How would an infantry company get armored support? Do armor companies transfer men and material where needed or are they only deployed at company strength etc?
If you were trying to take a small island (~250km2) held by two companies of infantry and some limited armor/air assets, what would the smallest sized unit capable of it? Assume a wider conflict necessitates diverting as few men and as little material as possible to it while still getting the job done.
This seems like a loaded question.
Because devgru does operations with 6 man groups
HOWEVER they have huge logistical support.
Does logistics count as being a part of the unit?

massive air campaign and one guy with a pointy stick to poke the charred bodies

No, assume naval logistics for the attackers in this scenario and a miniature normandy style beachead to get it to frontline futher inland.

You only need to have a normandy style landing if your enemy can be reinforced or there is time constraint.
Just nuke from orbit and send in some illegal immigrants to clean up the bodies.

Assume a time constraint + a relatively weak attacking nation.

then don't go to war

When going against an entrenched enemy, the common doctrine is to have a ratio of 3 to 1 locally.
Realistically, I'd say the bare minimum viable to reliably take that island without recklessly endangering your troops would be 5 companies. Theoretically, you could do it with much less, but that's only if nothing goes fubar, which is something you NEVER assume.

For any real operation I would say a MEU. A MEU can handle a variety of missions but I mean a fireteam can execute a basic ambush
>>27952515
I mean weak relative to well-funded NATO/Chicom armies rather than relative to the defenders.

Oh I didn't read the island scenario.
A MEU. It has a reinforced infantry battalion and armor support, with attached fixed wing and rotor

nice try isis leave Cyprus alone
