Ok /k/ Im so exited, but i need your help on deciding whether or not i should by this gun.

So at a gun show i went to a couple of hours ago there was a Mauser 1918 for 4k, but i believe i can get it for 2500. It has all the parts with matching serial numbers except for the pistol grip and the trigger (which is just a elongated mauser trigger) which should only set me back 500 bucks. Any ways, i was wondering if /k/ thinks this is a good deal.

When i talked to the guy that had it he said he sold his other one for 9k. Also im planning to shoot this gun every once in a while, the guy said it wouldn't be a problem in terms of safety but that he wouldn't recommend it because of the insane recoil, my other buddy also said it would be worth much more as a collectors piece and that i shouldn't fire it.
>>
Do alot of research first.

How and where are you going to get the spare parts?

Do you have a source or do you have the equipment to make 13.2mm TuF?

Yeah i am gonna research it all night and hopefully buy it tomorrow. I have a buddy who knows where i can get the trigger (after all its only a elongated normal Mauser trigger) and i can get a grip made for about 500 dollars.

I don't know of any specific places where i could buy ammo and the authentic rounds can be nearly a hundred a piece, i am hoping ill be able to find somebody that makes custom rounds

Ammo will be a collectable and priced accordingly.
Only company in the world still making it was French firm doing custom runs. Well over $100 per shot.
You will probably never see another trigger or pistol grip for sale. Parts for these are almost non-existent.
>>
>>27951697
Are you sure a custom round would be over a hundred dollars?! i can buy originals for 50 bucks a round
>>
>>27951765
Completely custom made.
Where are you finding originals for that cheap?
>>
>>27951812
down here at a reno gunshow this guy has like 20 or so rounds, he sells them for between 50 and 200 dollars depending on how much he can fuck over the buyer
>>
Get yourself a slav .57 rifle instead, OP.
>>
>>27951923
what is a slav .57? A ptrs/d?
>>
>>27951931

Yep.
>>
>>27951564
that fucker he's touching it
>>
>>27951974
i cant find any listings, how much do they run?

also they are classified as a destructive device and just generally don't seem as cool as a 1918 to me. Still fucking awesome though.

I did notice the bullets have twice the energy of the 1918 while only being a bit bigger, why is this?
>>
>>27951262
Yes you should go get it right now friend!

The bullets from a PTRD/S are moving quite a bit faster. 1km/s

bigger than .50, destructive device.
>>
>>27952065
upon further investigation the base diameter of the bullet on the ptrs is nearly twice that of the 1918 (0.6 vs 1.0 somthing), fuck now i dont know what i want anymore
>>
>>27952076
yeah i thought that too, but they made a special exemption just for these, maybe because it was made pre 1918 or maybe because so many soldiers brought them home as war trophies
>>
>>27951262
You're going to feel like shit when the stock cracks.
Wood only gets softer with age.
>>
>>27952116
H-how can i stop this from happening? And how much would it run me to fix?
>>
>>27952158
>H-how can i stop this from happening?
You can't, if the rifle was poorly enough kept it'll be too soft to survive more than a couple of shots without being damaged. I have a couple of 100+ year old rifles, it all depends on how much the previous owner(s) cared for it.

>And how much would it run me to fix?

Think of this as the Testarossa of guns.
>>
>>27952211
oh man... well i will ask him tommorow how good the stock is, from what i can tell it seemed in pretty good condition. I suppose i might still buy the gun just for profit after i fix it up and for the enjoyment of having it in my collection
>>
>>27952211
Does anybody have any ideas for some big guns incase this thing proves unshootable? I know there is a couple lahti's and boys anti tank rifles at the show but both of those are far and away more expensive then this and in my opinion not nearly as cool. Also both require special permits and taxes
>>
>>27952585
Just buy something in a Safari caliber.
>>
>>27952585
Just get a rebarreled Boys.
Pretty much the only thing you'll be able to shoot regularly.
>>
>>27952603
Eh, i already have a 8mm mag which is a necked down .375 with 90 percent of the force of a 416
>>
>>27952639
hm, i dont know, a boys costs about 4 times as much as this mauser. i suppose i could always just get a normal 50 at that point
>>
>>27952640
>8mm mag
That ain't shit, there's a plethora of calibers going from .37 to 70 caliber. Then there's the old blackpowder guns from 8 to 2 gauge.

You're going to sink your money into something that is so historically significant you might as well donate it to a museum if you had any consideration for it's value.
>>
>>27952663
If you're willing to have a wall hanger get the 1918.
If you have to shoot it the Boys in .50 is pretty much the only option now. All other AT rifles have harder to find ammo.
>>
>>27952676
I don't just want the 1918 for its value as a firearm, i think its a interesting gun aesthetically (Its like 4 mausers combined together into one monster of a rifle), And i think historically very cool. As for donating it i wasnt aware there was a shortage of 1918's? 15 some thousand were produced, and only about half of those were destroyed by the Americans after the war (i think). Any ways i might very well buy a separate rifle for actual usability.
>>
>>27952824
7500 is not a lot.
>>
>>27952852
What, when did i say that?
>>
>>27952116
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9-dCh8GJJA

i have seen several people fire their rifles, are they just exceptionally well maintained or are they reproductions or low power rounds?
>>
>>27952878

>>27952916
>are they just exceptionally well maintained
They can be, they may not be, the point is to check.

>>27952824
>i wasnt aware there was a shortage of 1918's? 15 some thousand were produced, and only about half of those were destroyed
>>
>>27952916
actually never mind, after translating some of the comments i found out he had reloaded these shells with far less powder.
>>
>>27952925
Am i wrong? I couldn't find the amount of remaining 1918's but i do know that thousands were sent to china, and sweden adopted them after the war along with several other countries.
>>
>>27952967
The point is 7500 is relatively few, so yes they are in short supply. This also means fabricating parts if something goes south.
>>
>>27952980
OH, ok so when you said 7500 i thought you were talking about the price of the boys anti tank rifle which several posters were suggesting i buy, Not the number of remaining 1918's. Yes 7500 left surely makes this a rare rifle but hardly enough to justify donating to a museum without at least having some fun first. For some reason it didn't click even though you were replying to a post in which i was specifically talking about the numbers of 1918's left.
>>
>>27953018
Just don't use full power loads, these rifles aren't getting younger.
>>
>>27951262
Alright lads, the stock is in great condition. Ill see if i can post some pics for you tommorow to thank you for your help.
