/k/ was its best before firearms become a huge talking point in the media. Prior to Sandy Hook (and to a lesser extent, Aurora), the only people who really browsed /k/ were genuinely into weapons. Guns, swords, knives: they were all welcomed. Then Sandy Hook happened, and everybody and their brother bought a gun and started browsing /k/. It diluted the experience and drove away the people who made it great.
Then those same people tried so hard to recapture what /k/ used to be with their own sites, but failed because they were trying to force it instead of it being natural.

No, it wasn't. The problem is 4chan has fundamentally changed in recent times. I've been around since 2004 (not /k/ since 2004 obviously since the board wasn't around then) and have witnessed 4chan grow and change over the years. I'd consider the 4chan golden years to be between 2004-2007 based on the culture. Once it became mainstream, things started going downhill. I still remember the first time I saw a Shoop-da-whoop and Longcat shirt in the mall. That was the beginning of the end.
Back then, /k/ was a lot more fun to browse. Part of it was because of the users, but a big part of it was because of the culture of 4chan as a whole. Back then, general threads didn't exist and the entire website had a different feel.
Every time a new board is added or somebody comes up with another general, it feels like it's killing the original 4chan. General threads kill creativity while new boards often split existing boards and spread them even thinner.
