What is /k/'s opinion on the INSAS? I haven't been on /k/ lately and I read up about this "weapon" and wondered if y'all had anything to say about it. This can also be a Shitty weapons thread I guess

Absolutley Disgusting

It looks like something that would come out of the kyhber pass, not get issued to troops.

Because there's no quality control on it, it looks different because it is different.

Some guy in an Indian defense forum got ahold of one and did a disassembly with a review. He basically fucking panned it, said it was an abortive cross breed between an AK and FNC with a bunch of extra bullshit added for no reason. You should look it up, it's a good read.

INSAS pretty much sucks at everything. We already know this. It doesn't really matter what India uses since the near-total internal corruption and indifference will guarantee it will be manufactured locally for way more than the actual unit cost with absolutely unsuitable build quality.

In a way (and this is why I love the history of firearms) the dysfunctional and useless INSAS is a symptom and product of a dysfunctional and useless Indian government.

They had a competition recently to try and replace it within the army, but everyone failed the tender either in monsoon tropical conditions, dessert conditions, or sub-freezing mountain conditions.

So now they are back to making an entirely new rifle to be rolled out sometime before 2020. They are saying aluminium milled receiver and both 5.56, 7.62, and option of some 6mm round yet to be finalized. This one is still a prototype, they changed the gas block to 90 degrees because of some issues with the smaller calibres iirc.

It is also worth nothing that most special forces and paramilitary currently use a mix of M4s, AKs, and Tavors. Pretty much tells you the overall quality of the rifle.

AAA game developers have made guns that are better than this
>"windowed" mag well
>rail over a nearly bare gas tube and barrel
>rail and handguard are two separate units
>flimsy sling swivel right on an open barrel
>magazine probably made in a furniture factory like the INSAS
>clear mags will stain from shitty curry fingers
>existing at all
My goodness India. Just swallow your undeserved pride and buy foreign weaons, literally anything is better

My brother was issued one in one of the "red-zones" bordering the northern states with the rebels. They are a committee designed gun split into manufacturing by 3 main gun makers. the furniture maker also makes patio furniture to give you a sense of the quality of manufacturing, but only one of the 3 makers is actually any good (OFB), the others are crap.

the rifle works. it is reasonably accurate as well.

the problem is that quality varies so much between batches and factories that hardly any of it interchanges. and many parts of the design are very poor, like the receivers are riveted severely, all the plastic is brittle, and it is not reliable unless kept insanely clean.

most army regulars use AKs from the rebels and keep the INSAS in the armory.

want to go nuts? the AK was offered for licensed domestic production for about 100 Rs per unit. the INSAS costs a little under 3000 Rs per unit.

there is so much waste and corruption in procurement as well as the babus in government only having friends and "certain people" able to produce it that it's a complete horror.
>>
>>27925485
Aren't they using Type 56s at the moment? Or did they insist on manufacturing those domestically too?

It looks like an FAL and a Kalashnikov fucked and gave birth to this, except the FAL and the Kalash aren't too far apart on the firearm family tree, so it turned out to be one of those retarded incest babies.
