Believe it or not, but many WWII vets reacted in similar ways. Back then most issues were somewhat hushed up.
But the "modern" style of warfare (guerillas vs. actual militaries) has created many new moral delimmas that soldiers must face and overcome. During WWII, the enemy almost always wore a uniform. Very rarely were civilians battling against allied forces in Europe, or Germans wearing allied uniforms/ no uniforms. Starting in Vietnam, US and our allied soldiers have been facing civilians as enemy combatants. They no longer can simply point at their target and say it is a bad guy as was possible in years before. This leads to mental fatigue and regret, either from taking or not taking a shot, for instance.
