>Martini-Henry
>Rolling Block (military style)

Which of these two would /k/ buy? I plan on getting one and I also plan on shooting it, although it will be minimal.
>>
>>27883260
My personal preference would be the rolling block.

Many different models out there with varying histories and chamberings.
>>
>>27883260
Why not Martini-Enfield for ammo availability .303 british is on the expensive side but you can use modern factory hunting rounds.
>>
>>27883365
Because I want a big-bore blackpowder rifle. I already have 2 lee-enfields.
>>
>>27883385

Martini is prettier IMO

Martini also has more history, on account of the shooting lots of black people etc.
>>

Both look pretty amazing, but the ultra sleek and long rolling block is hard to beat. Both are better looking than any other european counterpart.

I like the symmetry of the Martini as it doesn't have a hammer, but still smothered in wood and such

Not that the rolling block is ugly in any way, I just like symmetry

Pull down the lever, then hold down the trigger and bring the lever back up

I'm in the process of buying a Pedersoli Sharps Quigley rifle. So excited to throw some 45-70 down range

Martini would be fun too, but there's just something about a quality Quigley rifle that gets me going
>>
>>27887120
Quality they may be, but history they have not.
>>
>>27887129
Very true. I'm considering a Pedersoli Springfield trap door instead, but it's a really tough call.

It's the child in me that just wants to be Quigley
>>
>>27887174
Why not buy a Old Springfield trapdoor?
>>
>>27887183
I'm all for a trapdoor because I adore the action more than a falling block action, it's just the availability in Canada and shit dollar that weighs in heavily on the decision.

I'm just staying away from an older antique rifle because I intend to shoot it regularly and I've had nothing but good luck with Uberti and Pedersoli over the years.

It's neck and neck between these two

M.E. Mk.I's were built on existing Martini-Henry Mk.III's. This one was made in 1881 by the London Small Arms Co according to the somewhat faint roll mark on the right side of the receiver. It was converted to a Martini-Enfield in 1895 and a new roll mark was added to the left side of the receiver.
>>
>>27887935
Man, that is a strong action then. Damn shame no one is making falling block anymore, though understandable because it would be pricier than a break action while not having the follow up capability of a bolt. Though the Ruger No/1 I've heard are nice but they are a bit pricey for what they are and apparently QC isn't great.

Bromhead and Chard's Webley Mark VI's were anachronisms as well. They weren't developed until 1915 but look somewhat close to the service pistols of the day which were a mix of Tranter, Webley, Adams and Colt revolvers.

Here is a photo of an Adams MkIII revolver in .450 Adams.

Certainly looks legit.
Markings are clear, level, and properly spaced lettering. Machining looks good.
Typically on Khyber pass rifles the crowns and lettering are off. The trigger guard will show poor machining as well as the thumb rest checkering.
>>
>>27888232
"Untouched" just means they come as is. All you have to do is wipe off the gunk and it'll shoot just fine.

The ones you have to be careful with are the Francotte Martinis and Gahendras. Whether or not they're safe is a crapshoot.

Bit more to them than that.
There will most likely be pitting under the wood and a split wrist from the rusting of the stock bolt. The wood will probably be dried out and rotted in places requiring splicing in sound sections. Not all the peices may be there and some may be to deteriorated to use.

I figure this is a good enough thread to pose this question. Do any of you guys know what prices are fair for a Kentucky Long Rifle? I'm completely out of water on this and am seeing prices ranging from 400 to over a thousand. I'm not looking for a collector's piece, just something to shoot occasionally. Any help on these would be appreciated, what to look for when buying, marks to look for, things to avoid etc.
>>
/k/ how does one into black powder rifles? What's a good starting rifle/musket? Should I get a new production rifle or look for an older one?
>>
I really want a rolling block in 45-70 but all the repors dont have the full length wood like OPs pic.
>>
Rolling block, .577 is near unobtanium unless you want to be making your own brass.
>>
>>27889536
Depends on who made em and what lock they use.

Percussion Traditions Kits that still need to be put together will be around 2-300. finished rifles will be close to 500.

Flintlock kits go for 500ish depending on who is selling. complete rifles can be had for 700 and up.

if you get the nice ones like a pendersoli, prepare to pay over a grand.
>>
>>27889667
>good starting musket/rifle
they make inline muzzleloaders that can be had for like 100 bucks. if you want a more traditional piece, Hawkens are usually around 250.
I got into black powder by buying a colt navy repro. still my favorite handgun.
>>
>>27889667
Unless you want the convenience of shooting cartridges, then its probably best to get a .45-70 as reloading bits and bobs are pretty easy to find
Next is .577 Snider as when you move onto the martini they share many bits of equipment, but snider is easier to actually manufacture - there's even a 'poor mans way' of loading it just using ordinary shotgun shells on YouTube

>>
>>27892191
>>27892035
I thought it was a good deal since it included the bayonet also, which is $120 or so. Only thing that sucks is now I have to order brass, dies and molds. :(
>>
>>27892351
A Lee press costs about $120 and the dies are about $80-90 (cheapest I could find was here http://www.titanreloading.com/577450-martini-henry-3-die-steel but going to ebay might be cheaper because of shipping) .

It's important to note the cheaper presses aren't going to work unfortunately. You need one that can accept the Large Series dies which are 1 1/4-12 threading while the standard Lee size is 7/8-14 which the budget ones are solely designed for.

Can't seem to find bullets but moulds are about $80-90 (cheapest being on ebay but without handles) and you pretty much need it for bullets or it'll be about a dollar for them alone. Speaking of ebay there are chamber adapters that shoot .45 but it isn't very accurate apparently without doing some weird things with heeled bullets and the such

Cases as were mentioned are available at [email protected] for about $45 for a box of 25.

So total you are looking at $330 startup costs and that is without going into powder and primers, lead you could find if you look around. Pretty expensive but with something like Martini Henry it'll start paying for itself within 70 or so rounds.
>>
>>27892606
The Lee Classic Cast, Hornady LnL, and the RCBS Rock Chucker will all take the Lee M-H dies.
RCBS and other companies make the dies too but tend to be in oddball threading.
Making cases is pretty easy once you get the knack. 24 gauge brass is also fairly cheap and plentiful or .577 basic/NE can be used. Some brass is available but tends to be expensive since it is really only made in Australia.
>>
>>27892656
There was a guy in the PNW making them but apparently he's tapped out for a bit.
>>
>>27892678
From what I know he was using 24 gauge brass.
It's a bit thin and holds too much powder but it works. I still have another box to convert myself. Nice thing is rejects get trimmed and turned into Snider cases.
I also have a roll of brass sheeting. Planning on making some mandrels and rolling my own foil cases for a more antique feel.

>>
How many reloads can I get on each case? I am hoping to get at least 20 from each one
>>
>>27892982
Depends.
Soft loads and proper brass care with annealing you could probably get 20 from the thin shotshell brass. Purpose made brass will last longer.
>>
>>27893021
Well I just ordered 20rds of Bertam Brass (insanely expensive but I want to shoot the rifle the day I get it). So I hope those last at least 20 reloads. I am looking for a mold but all of them seem too expensive, I got a mold for my .41 swiss and 9mm for like 30ish for each. The only MH molds I can find are around $130
>>
>>27893043
Bertram should last.
Depending on bore you can use 45-70 molds.
I'm currently paper patching the Lyman 457125 for 500 grain bullets over 85 of blackpowder.

>>
>>27896956
If you like to tinker, Atlanta Cutlery has some rather rough but mainly functional ones for $180.

ginsboy has a very nice set of vids regarding restoration.
>>
>>27897088
The ones they have for $180 are Francotte Martinis and not safe to shoot. They're Nepalese made, unlike the British made ones which are around $500.
>>
>>27897123
Ah, I didn't look into the Gahendras well enough.

The main problem seems to be inconsistent bore size but there are people who fire it after checking with a gunsmith. Though when British made can be had for 300 more you are right in getting those instead.

Oddly enough Forgotten Weapons picked one up with a messed up barrel with several posts regarding plans to sleeve the barrel but apparently dropped it without a word.
>>
>>27897888
The Gahendras are hit and miss, but in general they are better made than the Francotte Martinis. Very few of those are in shootable condition, while many of the Gahendras can handle reduced loads with the proper sized bullet.

After rifles became 'obsolete' for British use they'd be given to commenwealth/volunteer troops

thousands were sent to Nepal & India etc. in the 1880s or 90s and chucked in an arsenal - only to be 'rediscovered' about 10 years ago and brought to the States to be sold to people like us
