If I really wanted accessibility, I'd keep my shotgun under my bed with a 3 digit combo lock that's already close to the code, and some rounds in my closet.

From the 1950s to the 1980s the FBI used #4 Buck with a simple lowbrass 2 3/4 shell. I've spent many hours loading and firing all different loads and the FBI is my favorite. It's a do-all load for hunting and defense.

It's more about minimizing damage to your own property and trying to tighten your area of effect with a shotgun. Birdshot will still go through walls in close quarters as will pretty much any round when fired in CQC.
People also use buckshot and slugs because of how much bigger the wound channels per ball/slug are. Men aren't bears but they aren't varmint or birds either. The wad from a close shot with birdshot is more likely to do the most damage than the BBs.
Also the idea is to mag dump the threat, you won't realistically have time to check and see if your first 1 or 2 shots disabled them effectively.

It's up front. The ball is decently accurate (~1/2" groupings at 25 yards) and the pellets generally group decently too. Sometimes there's a few fliers, but they're still on the silhouette at 25 yds. The shell is centurian buck and ball incase you were wondering/didn't know.
