300BLK outperforms any pistol caliber you can put up against it even out of a 4.5in barrel.
I think you could do a through-grip magazine that would fit in a medium sized hand alright and get 18+1 rds in double stack.
Then you'd have caliber commonality with a rife round as well and could have a complete GTW/SHTF system and save massively on SAWC by sharing calibers in both your LR and SR/PD weapons.

I have a hard-on for the idea of a 7.62x39mm pistol with magazine in grip and some Russian Space Magic for feeding. OR a helical magazine with like 12 rounds. Perhaps a pan mag would work too... but then you need to either A: put the sights on the mag (ugh) or B: increase sight height over bore to clear the magazine. I still think that's the best idea.
I'm fairly certain there's a coma only that makes a Thompson Encore barrel in .300 blk.

Optimized for short barrels and suppressed. Going from a 16" barrel to a 9" barrel you only lose like 10% velocity. Closely mimics the ballistics of 7.62×39 in an AR platform and no feeding issues while being able to use a stanag at full capacity as well as uses standard mil spec bcg.
Better subsonic performance than 5.56 and more barrier blind than 5.56 in supersonic loads.
Basically, it's the round of the future and gives you the most punch you'll get out of an ar without going full /arg/ levels of gucci/boutique/autism

What if you made a magazine that held the rounds at a 45 degree angle, like the back of the follower was much lower then the front. This would reduce OAL of the mags by a bit. Also if you just change the shape of the folower, the spring will still sit flat and not bind up from the angle or something stupid.
basicly the magwell/grip would have to be just the backstrap, mag droppy button, and trigger guard. Then the mag slides in the middle of them.
The feed mechanism would probably need to be special to deal with the tilted rounds but your kinda building it from scratch anyways.
