How can I get a set of encrypted radios? Yes I know they are pretty illegal to use. I don't want to use them, just have.
>>
>>27795413
Need to use it with CHIRP.

Also, may need to install drivers depending on which Baofeng you got.
>>
>>27795471
Worked fine for me after watching this video to get the driver working.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arpGoThEtCE
>>
>>27795471
They rarely work because the market is flooded with knock-off Chinese cables with a counterfeit Prolific usb to serial converters in them. The current drivers make them useless, so you have to find, install, and roll back your USB drivers. Have fun with that.

They put a filter on to turn juggalo-speak into weeaboo-speak.
>>
>>27795603
Yes, most of the time.
You can listen to your local police/ems/fire and other public service bands as long as they are analog. I have all the local sheriffs, pd's, and fire departments programmed in my Baofeng and it works great. Just don't broadcast on them because its bad m'kay?
If your local leo's use digital radios you need a digital scanner and odds are they are using trunked digital so you'd be double fucked.

Not so much. It requires some /g/entlemanly skills, but totally possible. Want to make it portable and you can use a raspberry pi. There's probably a better way to go portable if I sit and think a bit.

here. I deal with a bunch of spectrum related stuff for work, but I keep putting off making my own digital scanner because i just come home and drink. thinking about going for broke and making a linux laptop for it

thanks m8, the more you know
>>
>>27796980
Ah yeah, I follow my local EMS trunked P25 service from time to time.
That guide is pretty outdated, since Unitrunker can interface with the RTLSDR dongles directly now. No need for SDR# and the debug hacks.
It works pretty well, though I do need to get a better antenna setup .

Also go download "CHIRP", it's free and it's the only real way to program your chinky HT.
It'll have several default lists for FRS/GMRS, MURS, Marine, etc. that you can copypasta from when building your channel list.

Also just recenty got into comms with the Bow-wow UV-82.
Using it as my radio for the fire service since my department is volunteer and doesn't have hundreds of dollars to throw around on radios for newbies when they just bought us all new gear.
So far I have all the countywide police/sheriff/fire/EMS frequencies programmed in, as well as the first five GMRS, the five MURS, and a few true "emergency" channels such as the national search-and-rescue and Marine 16.

What is some other cool shit I can listen to?

>pro-tip I don't have a HAM license yet, I'm using it solely as a scanner except for on the fire channels.

Need version 3.2.0.0 of the Prolific driver to work with the knockoff Prolific chips. Get it here:
http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
>>
>>27796924
>>27796912

I have this working with the local 900MHz trunking system. It's comprised of two RTL-SDR dongles, a 800-2.5GHz Log Periodic anteeeena.
Two pieces of software are required. I use Unitrunker to follow the control channel with the first receiver and tell the second receiver where to listen for the digital encoded voice. That voice must be piped into a Virtual Audio Cable or looped out of and back into your sound card. Then the second piece of software, DSDPlus, takes in the digitally encoded audio and puts out audible voice.
Voice talkgroups that are encrypted can't be listened to, but simple digital encoding can be listened to.

Try RadioReference.com, punch in your area and see what other licenses are issued for your area. I have several municipal services, ambulance service, fire, security/comms for several larger businesses, etc.
It's also worth putting in NOAA frequencies also.
>>
>>27798174
Actually I meant to link to radioreference in my original post, because it's where I found all the ones I currently have.

I keep the local NWS frequency plugged into the VFO mode, so if I need it all I have to do is turn the radio off, hold menu. and turn it back on.
I'm not going to actually program it as a channel, because it will park my scan on it every time it passes it. And I don't know how to set channels to be skipped during scan in Chirp.

The "Skip" column in CHIRP will cause the channel to be skipped when there is an 'S' in the memory chosen to skip.
>>
>>27798262
Well fuck anon, thanks

Now adding NWS channels and setting FRS and MURS to skip as well

Okay /k/, I have a gift for all you commo guys.
Since errybody like infographics, I've split up my lists of frequencies into several quick references for each service. It contains all the info one should need to program their Baofeng with CHIRP, or otherwise program a rig to be interoperable with the frequencies listed.
If something isn't right, reply and I'll fix it.

Neat info to have. If you export the memories as a .CSV I can put it up on murdercube.com/radioconfig for people to download. (my email is komradedimitri at gmail dot com)

By the way, if anyone is new to programming radios, check out murdercube.com/radioconfig for a brief start-up guide.

I can't talk any of my senpai into also getting one... It's stupid but how to talk from a real radio to "walkie talkies" that all the fuds have?
>>
>>27799469
Not -technically- legal to use a Baofeng with Walmart Walkie Talkies, but use low power and don't be an idiot and nobody will know or care.
Use the FRS/GMRS frequencies above to talk to walkie-talkies, assuming you are in the US.
>>27798723

Europe uses PMR generally, which is inter-operable with the Baofeng if it's straight analog (no digital): >>27798738
