I bought a set of Unlimited for $1800 20 years ago. It's worth a ton now, though taking those p9 cards in and out of sleeves put plenty of wear on them.
I just sold off the dregs of the summer cards I bought in 2003, so the 2 Summer packs, Summer Sol Ring, and Blue Hurricane I have left effectively cost me $3k.
Much better investment value than guns. You just have to avoid playing Standard.

My area is huge on standard and most of my friends play it so I get dragged onto it more than I'd like, but since it's with friends it doesn't bother me as much. Legacy is almost non-existent in my area and modern is fairly rare unless it's modern season then I might get a tournament in once a week if I'm lucky. Guns are pretty big in my area though and alot of my friends are as big of /k/ommandos as I am so that's a nice balance.

Yeah, there are two stores within an hour here that do Modern every Friday. Given that, I don't complain much about the lack of older formats.
That's only recently though. I did play Standard as recently as RtR/Theros. Loved UW control... that deck was a house (but a little slow sometimes). Also played UW Delver before that. Even better... very much my playstyle. Innistrad was one of the more fun blocks in recent years.

Innistrad besides being my starting set had everything I love from classic horror and a really good story and lore associated with it so I couldn't be more happy to be going back. I recently just started getting interested in legacy and I have some of the stuff that I need to play the deck that I want to (Death and Taxes) in the format, but the rest is just so damn expensive so I don't see myself getting into it any time soon. I play jund and grixis in modern and throughly enjoy both of those, right now in standard I've been playing abzan Allies with a focus on vampires since they're my favorite creature type. Before BFZ I was running top tier esper dragons and those served me well. Mostly I just wish I had more time and money for both guns and magic though.
