Still waiting on what happened at Deir Ezzor.
Put #deirezzor in twitter if you want to follow live. 4 hours ago a VBIED crashed the front gate of the airbase after all day clashes. Pro IS source says IS has breached the base. Nothing new from either side for the last 4 hours.

I love set piece battles like this. Fortified airbase with excellent terrain, defenses, and airpower vs crazed heavily armed suicidal zerg rushes. This is some good action.

What's the strategic advantage of capturing DEZ?
>>
>>27480029
so its basically a stalemate?
>>
>>27483125
The airbase? It has a large group of SAA republican guard on it. I don't know the exact number. IS capturing the base would a disaster for the SAA as some of their best units would be decapitated by IS and the rest of the city would fall. That's a strategic loss.

However at this time the SAA and their star General Zahreddine have be able to defend the base as it's on a cliff in parts surrounded by minefields. They have decided to hold out against endless waves of IS fanatics and so far they have.

I read it already that was from yesterday not today or tonight and the number of IS killed in Deir Zour was closer to 40 or 50.

The only grain of truth is if you add up all IS deaths from two separate fronts in Syria it would equal 150 because the YPG killed a bunch of them yesterday morning in Hasakah province.

This is one the BEST videos I've seen coming from Syria! Thank you anon! Really fucking AWESOME!

I'm learning russian and my russian is not good but he mentioned that Spetsnaz snipers are active in the area but have not shown them in the video.

Vague new information in Deir Zour. Pro rebel(not IS) post of continued clashes around the airbase early this morning with heavy SAA/IS shelling, heavy weapons being used.

Pro rebel source is saying ISIS is being silent about the combat around the airbase right now. This to me means either they just suffered a large mount of casualties and do not want to talk about it or they want a media blackout on their movements. Either could be true.

Also the subtext is amazingly clear. It's not that the FSA are the good guys, its that another country DARES to have a foreign policy that isn't in line with Obongo's retardation. That's literally whats triggering all this, there is no regard or thought for actual policy in event Assad were to be taken out.

Don't lose hope yet pro Assads the Northern Hama attack is still ongoing. One of the biggest SAA offensive's I have seen in a long time. The Russians planned it too as a version of their deep battle. They are attacking on a wide front.

According to the reporter no Speznaz forces were shown in the video. He said they were used to pinpoint enemy snipers and reconnaissance as well as some fighting.

The video has some general information regarding the situation in Damascus suburbs.
He is showing a night offensive by the forces stationed there, claiming success. He speaks about how the night attack was superseded by a constant aerial bombardment for a few days, but that the enemy is entranced in tunnels.
Then in the morning he said the enemy launched a counter offensive, but the troops there were ready for this.
In the closing interview and words, he says that even though the attack is going well, the enemy can stop it any time simply by moving their forces and attacking a different point, which would force the troops there to stop the offensive to send fighters there.

not a word for word, but in general that's what's going on.

Fucking THIS

It has nothing to do with who is supporting who

It is all about:
1. Russia did not ask permission
2. Russian is supporting the man the US painted as a "villan" for the last 5 years - yet Russia has won global public support for this
3. This is the 3rd time Russia has bitched Obama on the Syrian crisis (specifically)
4. (Issue only the truly long sighted politicians are worried about) This builds Russia's "strong man" status and helps them facilitate their Eurasian Economic Union (local) and their image as an alternative to the US (global)

I don't know. Committing some forces for a push seems reasonable.
Waiting till winter is over is going to give the rebels time to adapt to the new weapons and aerial bombardments. To learn the limitations of the Russian air force.

I think trying to shove while the enemy is off balance is a good idea, as long as you don't over commit.

Do they have access to MPADS? I'm seriously considering never flying again....

From Robert Baer's See no Evil:

>"We have buried in Ghuta, near the Damascus airport, an SA-7 missile," he said matter-of-factly, as if telling me he'd planted a bed of petunias in his garden back home. "What we need is for you to inform us when Assad's airplane is ready to take off and he is on it."
I remember reading in one of Robert Baers books that back in the day the muslim brotherhood had buried one near an airport and wanted the CIA to tell them what plane a president was on so they could take it out

There was a sizable amount of man portable AA missiles in Syria a few years back. But seems like most of them were used up and they had no resupply.
They still have a few left, but it seems like the SyAF is flying slow helicopters on pretty low altitudes, without being shot down, pretty regularly.

memes aside, the US was supplying the Kurds and some opposition groups for a while. But never with AA missiles. It would be a major policy shift if they do now.
The lack of portable AA missiles also suggests (in my opinion) the US forced Saudis and Qatar to not supply such either.

Not supplying AA has been American FP for decades. If Obama breaks this, he is really throwing away the rulebook. Not a good idea, considering what happened in E.Ukraine

Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea.
“Four missile ships launched 26 cruise missiles at 11 targets. According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage,” Shoigu said.

The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, probing their efficiency.

They have tomahawk-like missiles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3M-54_Klub

3M-14 - DOD designation SS-N-30A. An Inertial guidance land attack variant deployed by the Russian Navy. The submarine-launched weapon has a basic length of 6.2 m (20 ft), with a 450 kg (990 lb) warhead. Its range is 1,500–2,500 km (930–1,550 mi). Its subsonic terminal speed is Mach 0.8.

3M-14T - DOD designation SS-N-30A; is the Inertial guidance land attack variant which is deployed by the Russian Navy. A surface ship with VLS launched missile, with thrust vectoring booster, its basic length is 8.9 m (29 ft), its warhead weight and other performance are the same as the 3M-14.

Pro regime sources said the SAA took Lataminah but that is being disputed.

All that said I doubt this is how the SAA envisioned their first offensive backed by "official" Russian airpower.

Russian hinds have been spotted in the air conducting CAS.

For the days worth of offensive rebels are claiming 18 vehicles (tanks, apcs, etc) hit/destroyed.
>>
>>27489700

This offensive is on going as of now, so far it looks like the SyAA has made good progress but at high cost, they might be able to make up for it if they keep rolling on though.

Interesting as it's the first time we've seen Russian hinds operating alongside the Syrians.

There's a good thread on leddit's r/SyrianCivilWar if anyone's interested. People are saying the rebel's claims might be exaggerated but it's too early to tell.
>>
>>27491025
>rebel's claims might be exaggerated
I think they very well are. I seriously doubt the rebel claims of not losing an inch of ground to this combined SAA/Russian steamroller.

I think the captured t-72 with kontakt-1 was probably the only good news for the rebels.
Destroying a dozen or so militia T-55s and T-62s isn't much of an accomplishment when the SAA has warehouses filled with the damn things.
>>
Some TOW strikes worth posting from Hama
>>
>>27491009
I've heard about 8 vehicles taken from the SAA, 7 destroyed and one captured. Seemed to me like the most accurate count, taking into account the rebels are saying 18-20 and the government supporters 2-3.

Looks like a T-62, I assume that the fuel system on the T-62 is not different from the T-55, The TOW struck the drivers area, therefore missing the onboard tank rounds and the turret was not directly aiming infront of it but to the left.

The HEAT ray killed the driver, passed trough the crew interior striking the engine. It goes fire and the gunner, loader and commander bail out with no serious leg wound.
