Well I agree with your sentiment that this isn't exactly something you should want to be a part of, you have to remember that they were people.
Ignoring the SS, I tend to see the bulk of the Wehrmacht this way: Imagine your country was fighting a nationalistic war that's started to fall apart. You love your country, and no matter how abhorrent your government is, you're not fighting for your government, but for your country.
Pretty much imagine the post-9/11 bloodlust/patriotism, followed up by all of that falling apart on itself, and your home itself being directly threatened.

I would imagine that he would be comparing it to enlisting in the Marine Corps or some other sort of other armed forces branch after having had lost a family member / friend during the events of 9/11, believing "we're going to take the fight to them and kill us some sandniggers", when in reality they're getting a thumb up their arses to fight in a country who pleaded for help, then grew angry with us and made us leave, then when we left they claimed they needed us more than ever after the fucking 'trained' police forces were corrupt or too afraid to actually enforce the laws there.
If you really want to fight for 'your country' or 'family', you'd best be waiting on your couch with favored-weapon-of-choice pointed at the door to blast the unfortunate tweaker who decides to pay you a visit.

Needs to include the fact that Germany got completely bent over the barrel following the Armistice's signing. They went from having a solid empire to a pretty poor excuse of a republic. Not even considering the whole "stabbed in the back" theory, they were looking for any person/party/idea to reinvigorate their weakened national image and overall sense of pride. That coupled with the war debt, followed by the depression, which made the mark practically worthless, gave rise to the man who seemed to have the plan.
Even the less fervently nationalistic Germans who were skeptical of Nazism probably saw Hitler's rise as a better option than continuing the Weimar Republic
