Mostly western creatures, mostly western setting, eastern sensibilities, and generally basic as fuck. The nips will likely never get tired of it.
Good variance of characters, many peoples' favorite single characters rolled into a group, oldest Windows game, and they appear in a lot of official works. With Meiling, Patchy, Sakuya, Remi, and Flan you get a bunch of different personality types for people to like, and they interact with the protagonists often. They also appear in one of the most basic games so it's easy for people to come up with their own ideas about them. Not surprising they are widely regarded as the best or peoples' favorites.
I like EET+Mokou and Keine more but I can see the appeal.

I like almost every cast better, except UFO's. In UFO, the cast is only shitty Buddhists except Kogasa, who is amazing.

The other ones are debatable or subjective, but how? EoSD's plot is pretty barebones even for Touhou and we barely know anything about most of EoSD's characters and their backstory.
They're also not particularly plot convenient.
Rumia has never been relevant, Dai and Koakuma are barely canon, Sakuya got booted from playable status until DDC since she has nearly no reason and motivation to ever go questing and be involved, and Flan has only appeared in cameo and is confined to the mansion despite being one of Touhou's most popular characters.
As a whole the SDM and the EoSD cast is just very isolated from everyone. And as a western-inspired group they don't fit *that* well into Touhou.
I'd also argue their importance. They might possibly be the reason for the spellcard rules and as the first Windows cast, they were important once.
But in the "new Touhou" which I think is depending on ever increasing connectivity and interaction, like I said, SDM is very isolated from the rest of the cast at a time when even Eientei is more involved.
So, they were important long ago. But PCB and IN serve as more of a link between the old and new Touhou than EoSD does.
Unless I'm proven wrong and they're actually more involved more in the near future that won't change.

SDM memes are the worst.
Eientei faction cast is tightly knit as other groups, but they don't give off that whole family vibe. Nonetheless, they care about each other and the characters themselves are interesting so they are my favorite cast.

I still haven't warmed up to the LoLK cast. For every other Touhou I'd have two or three characters I really like a month or two after release. No one really sticks out to me other than Clownpiece, and that's mostly because I love fairies. Other than that, IN has the worst cast.

EET feels more professional and held together as master-servant chains than anything else. That being said, their supplemental material was the most endearing to me and having Mokou around to push back with Kaguya made her way more likable and interesting instead of just being Perfect Moon Bitch
I like all the factions, although the characters in DDC never really felt cohesive. Waggysaggy, Sekibanki, Seija, and Shinmyoumaru are great but the musical characters are pretty flat.
IN has my favorite cast overall but I'm quite fond of SA's as well. Moriya Shrine is good too but I like them most when Kanako is doing stupid shit like giving a bird god powers.

I feel like there's a very clear distinction between the Moriya Shrine and the Youkai mountain inhabitants though. I love the MoF cast but I really don't consider Hina/Nitori/Aya part of the Moriya Shrine faction, especially considering how at odds they were with Kanako's plans in MoF.
