Can we have a thread for Japanese card games that aren't Yugioh? /tg/ really isn't fond of these types of card game
>>
I would be so into card games if I knew anyone who played them.
>>
>>15206809
The Pokemon and Yugioh card game crazes were some of the most fun periods of my life. Now, it's either learn to like Magic or nothing.
>>
Tried ws and chaos some years back. The language barrier is too much.

Not a card game like Yugioh or magic but I have lots of fun playing Tanto Cuore with friends. It's a deck building game similar to dominion where you use love points to employ maids that give you various abilities to buy better maids and get more VP to win the game. The games are great and illustrations are really nice.

Weiss Schwarz has some sets released in English, although it seems random as to which series get localized.

>>15207422
Tanto is fun. Favorite card right here, both for the art and the effect.
>>
/tg/ isn't fond of them because they're not good.

Games like WS base their appeal on having cute girls and being associated with established franchises, rather than on being good games with good mechanics that are actually fun to play. And as the other anon said, add the language barrier to a game that's already just a hodgepodge of half-baked, poorly-executed ideas, and it becomes completely impenetrable.

There are much better ways to both look at cute girls and play card games.
>>
>>15207929
What do you think about MtG and Pokémon TCG?
>>
>>15206235
I purchased some of these, though I don't think it was Chaos TCG, in 2012. But I don't play, I just got them as a collecting item.

It's fucking hilarious to make /tg/ angry by mentioning /jp/ card protectors or playmats.

Such as? And don't say Magic, we all know it is better than every other TCG ever

My one friend plays this. It seems Japanese enough. I know on the mats or whatever it has the name in katakana along with English, plus the art style.

There's so many random card games flooding the marker every time. You'd think people woulf get tired of them and stop buying new anime/otaku culture based playing cards since most of the time you'll play with them twice if you're lucky enough to have friends and then drop them.
>>
Does anyone still play Duel Masters? I wasn't even aware it was still being printed until a few months ago when I saw that the anime is still ongoing.
>>15207929
If /tg/ liked good games, they would drop D&D altogether for having such an infantile and simplistic view of "morality" compared to something like the World of Darkness games.

The localized version of Heart of Crown is coming to Steam later this year, maybe we can play that. It seems like it plays similarly to Dominion so it can't be that bad a game.

FLIPFLOPs (who I originally learned about from Touhou doujinshi) actually released the original PC version at C83 but I don't think anyone cracked the DRM, and everyone was either too poor or too illiterate to play it so that never became a thing.
>>
>>15206235
Ok,

Vanguard was sort of cool but pwoer creep was stupid. At least my genesis cards look nice.

Battlespirits made no sense

I have a single pack of cards, i really like the cards, from what i understand the mechanics of the game are similar to those of Duel Masters which i used to play as a kid so i'm pretty interested but i don't have money for more cards, nor do i have anyone to play with at the moment anyways so it will have to wait.
>>

Would you play an official Touhou TCG? Like, Touhou Project-only thematically, some not very original but good game mechanics, flavor text by Zun, Zun-approved art by Zun-approved artists or even by Zun himself, official manga and magazines contains promo cards and boosters, and so on.
>>
>>15226077
It's one of those things that would be neat but has a really high opportunity cost.

For the same amount of effort of flavor/art the games and derivative works could be taken to the next level

>>
>>15231355
Well, at least Weiss Schwarz has gotten kind of popular. Its a pretty fun game and I would probably play it if there was a community near me.

Wixoss is just too obscure. No one fucking knows or plays it even though it had an anime. There is simply too much competition already for a game like that to succeed.
>>
>>15231355
Nice Homu. I sold my green and went with a Mami+Nagisa deck because I pulled Nagisa's SP
>>
>>15207068
Pokemon and Yugioh still have pretty large communities, but if you haven't played them in a while they will be very different than you remember. If you want to make money though Magic is your only choice though.
>>
I have been playing Force of Will recently. Really like the game and enjoy having low cost singles. The meta currently favors only a couple of setups on the highest level, but it is tons of fun to build decks around specific characters that you like.
>>
>>15231355
I really can't stand Weiss Schwarz myself. The entire gameplay requires you to take more damage to use more powerful cards, which puts the entire strategy into one narrow alley. While waifu collection may be nice, a lot of the art comes from somewhat blurry screenshots of their respective shows, that aren't vector traced or anything.

I would love to try Wixoss or Force of Will. Tempted to get the FoW Kaguya and modify it to look like Touhou's Kaguya.

There was another one of these as well which was a bit more substantial.

Unfortunately neither game is particularly balanced. There was one that was made and playtested heavily by some Something Awful members but I don't know how it turned out.

Speaking of Dominion there were so many reflavored Dominion games using IPs like Majikoi and Etrian Odyssey

I used to play a lot of magic, when I did though there was this one guy that would come to the shop carrying the "Fruits Basket" card game with him (he had other games to. Poor guy was a boardgamer in a den of Magic neckbeards). I never played with him, he was a remarkably autistic little faggot, but I do somewhat regret it.

I tend to not like a lot of Japanese card games because while I do like the art it's often just a bunch of character portraits without any scene or story attached. That game that's just a bunch of cropped promotional art in particular seems really dumb.

I still want to play Hanafuda though, ever since I saw Summer Wars I wanted to try it. The cards are very fetching as well.

>>15207422
Maids are second only to princesses on my list or role fetishes and I will definitely be getting this game now that I've been made aware of it. I don't even have anyone to play it with but I'll figure something out, maybe hire a maid.

Also, question to /jp/, which card game has the best anime?
>>
>>15257944
You should look at FoW, there is an actual story with each block having its own story

I agree with you in the typical Japanese CCG. Bushiroad needs to learn why its card games aren't long lasting.

YES. WIXOSS needs more of a fanbase outside of australia/SEA. I own most of the SD and collect the cards, but not worth learning the game more than the basics because just playing online is boring.

>>15231355
>>15232690
WIXOSS's dub sucked, and the incest sub plot might have hurt its chances. Weiss is multiple IP's so easier to market over here. Its a shame the game is largely luck based and some sets are much better than others.

The mechanics to WIXOSS, and reading on the metas, make the game play seem very interactive. Duelmasters is also a game done right, in terms of powerlevel vs collecting vs fun. Its a shame WOTC cant keep a game alive unless it has a 20 year old IP.

Buddyfight is new-ish, at least newer than CFV.

Gameplay is kinda vaguely reminiscent of MtG in that you are leading an army of monsters and can use spells to support them. An interesting quirk is that in terms of flavor, the player can also involve themselves in the fight by equipping a weapon.

It definitely is intended for a younger audience, as evidenced by a lot of the cards being things kids think are cool - some random examples being a huge three headed dog with machine guns strapped to it, a robot ninja, the unholy lovechild of Godzilla and Galactus, and one of the more iconic cards in the series is basically you summoning a gigantic flaming sword to kill your foe! That said, it also has stuff that will resonate with adults- one of the 'worlds' of the game (think clans if you know CFV) is filled with references to things like GaoGaiGar, Sentai, and in a couple months PreCure/Sailor Moon.

If your local game store has the new starter decks (pictured), they're a great buy if you wanna try the game out on the cheap without much care for how your cards look.
>>

There's not much more to tell you at this point, not a lot of cards have been shown yet from the set that introduces them.

As for the age range bit, from what I have seen, I haven't seen a lot of players in the game's intended age range. For example, at a large event of about a hundred players, it was almost entirely young college-age-ish adults.

the NA player base seems very disperse. Most concentrations are in Australia/SEA and apparently some in Mexico. Shame it never caught on like weiss did in LA/NYC.
>>
I'm planning on shilling Luck and Logic pretty hard at my locals. We have 3 Weiss players and I'm not sure about Vanguard. I really want Luck and Logic to be alive, at least locally.
>>
>>15297904
I wish the anime had been better, but might pick the game up when it dies in less than a year and the locals cant even give them away

The other japanese games at locals are all popular (Force of Will, Vanguard, Yugioh, and a handful of Weiss) so I cant see another one breaking into it. Anyone play Vanguard? Some oof the art is nice and thinking of getting into it.

yes but only the cute cards
>>
>>15297948
I want to play cute girl cards, and know weiss already. what should I play in vanguard?
>>
>>15297941
FoW is decently popular, Yugioh is obviously real popular, Weiss not so much but the owner plays so there is always someone to go up against
>>
>>15298004
Probably Neo Nectar, Genesis, Oracle Think Tank or Bermuda Triangle
>>
Is Vanguard actually alive? I hear people shit on it all the time for being power creeped as fuck.
>>
>>15298285
It's really quite balanced right now which is surprising. Every clan has 2-4 "competitive" decks but budget and rogue variants always have a fighting chance due to the game's mechanics
>>
>>15298437
Is there a decent scene? I never really see anyone talk about any games besides yugioh and magic, and very occassionally pokemon.
>>
>>15298487
I'm in Melbourne and the game is pretty popular here. Obviously not MTG/Yugioh levels but it's a good 4th place after those two and pokemon.
>>
3rd Place in Weiss Munich boys. ENG format is the only good Weiss Format currently, JP went to shit.

>>15298487
I just competed in Springfest Munich last weekend, traveling from Sweden. Was decently alive, for a Springfest event we got 32 something teams, meaning 96 people for a minor event.
>>15298004
Permuda, Genesis, Neo Nector, Oracle Think Tank, are almost exclusively cute girls clans, Spike Brothers have cute triggers, Aqua Force has Some cuties and husbando materials.
>>
>>15299028
Uluru is current cutest trigger
>>
>>15299060
nah

>>
>>15299096

>>
>>15299099
Refros limited to 1 can't come soon enough
>>
>>15299105
Nociel will still be tier 1, thanks for new support in gb07 boys
>>
>>15299115
True dat m8, just be less faggy without refros loops.
>>
>>15298437
>Every clan has 2-4 "competitive" decks
I wouldn't say that, there's clearly plenty of rogue decks, and stuff like that, but in general, there's perhaps only half of the clans with a tier 2+ deck.
>>
>>15299210
Aside from Murakumo every clan can compete.
>>
>>15299218
Rogue decks can compete, yeah, but I do not count rogue decks as competitive.
>>
>>15299225
So non competitive clans are what; Murakumo, Touken Ranbu, Oracles, Gold Paladin, Genesis and Dark Irregulars? 5 out of 24 aint bad plus one joke clan.
>>
>>15299238
I'd argue for Narukami, Nubatama, Spike bros, Pale moon, Bermuda, Megacolony and perhaps Great Nature as well, some have topped wit them, but only very occasional tops, therefore I consider them rogues, especially with the stories of some getting carried extremely hard in team league.
>>
>>15299283
I can maybe relinquish most of those just because they're inconsistent but Great Nature is legit. It's hard to say what really constitutes a top deck anyway since all Japs want to use is Sanctuary Guard and Revengers. Team League is stupid best of 1 shit, at least in my country.
>>
>>15272197
What kind of deck can I build using her? She is the cutest but her cards are pretty shit compared to the other girls
>>
>>15300139
I mean she doesn't really have many cards yet, hell her set hasn't even been released yet.
>>
>>15299028
Congrats anon. Doesn't that mean you get a paid trip to the next big tournament? What did you play and what did you see at the top tables?
>>
>>15300880
Only first place get a trip paid, only top 2 gets invited to the Continentals.
I played Deathgun/Blue SAO, teching heavily against Titans(1/0 DG level reducer into 2/1 DG destroyer), because I thought there would be a lot of Titans, but there was only 1 in the whole Tournament, which I met in top 8 and just ravaged.

Top 8 consisted of, what I saw, 2 AoT(1 Corps who got 2nd place, 1 Titan), 1 SAO(Me), 1 Pdiva(4th place), 1 Kancolle (who got first place). I think there was another Kancolle at least at the top8, but I wasn't really paying attention to them.

I have altered art of a few magic cards. (Touhou and Idolmaster) Although I have no deck that's weeaboo themed. Also I would like to play Commander/EDH with anyone from /jp/ sometime. I doubt it'll ever happen though.
>>
>>15301176
Just use Cockatrice and find some interested anons here or on a /jp/ related IRC channel.
>>
>>15302504
Are you an interested anon?
>>
>>15306228
I'd be interested if you're okay with a newbie.
>>
>>15306523
I'm perfectly okay with a newbie. Is there any way to contact you or do I have to go on Cockatrice to find you?
>>
>>15306569
I'll set up cockatrice tonight or tomorrow and we can play. I want to go over the rules one more time as well, i'm a complete newfag
>>
>>15307231
Is it going to have a password and if so, what's the password and what time exactly? "Tonight" could mean anything depending on the timezone. This is all pretty vague.
>>
>>15307279
I'm US central time. I don't actually have cockatrice installed so that's what I meant by "set up". I'll be checking this thread so we can figure out roughly what times we're both free.
>>
>>15307422
I made a game room on the Woogerworks Cockatrice server under the description "/jp/" and a password of "Otaku". I'll just sit in that room semi-afk waiting for anyone to join.
>>

Are TRPGs accepted in this thread?

I wish I could read this.

I played a game of it once. I had fun. The system is really interesting from a design perspective, but open to some serious exploitation and/or nonsense (friendship beams).
>>
>>15312746
There are a few Japanese tabletop RPGs I want to try. Sword World comes to mind, but a few other series I like have game tie-ins and I'm curious to see how those work.
>>
>>15312746
Didn't the Daicon video reference a couple western tabletop games?
