In Japanese terminology, a distinction is often made between visual novels, which consist predominantly of narration and have very few interactive elements, and adventure games, a form ofadventure gamewhich may incorporate problem-solving and other types of gameplay. This distinction is normally lost outside Japan, where both NVLs and ADVs are commonly referred to as "visual novels" by international fans.https://youtu.be/ELfxtdEakhk

I'm not so sure about that. The Japanese don't even use the word "visual novel" to describe the genre. They primarily use ギャルゲー (gyaruge), エロゲー (eroge), and アドベンチャーゲー (adventure game). Gyaruge and eroge are used interchangeably to describe typical adult visual novels where the main goal is to "get with" the girl you like. If the game is non-pornographic but within the same sub-genre, they just use gyaruge. "Adventure game" is used for most other sub-genres (mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, etc.), regardless of the level of interactivity or pornographic material.
