I'm not him, but it describes "liking a thing" as a far more unified than it really is. Saying "the fandom" implicitly suggests that everyone who likes a thing belongs to one group. Compare it to saying "the group of people with brown eyes". There's clearly such variety within that group that the "the" makes it seem odd.
