Real history is usually told through the lens of education, objectively relating facts. Fiction about such things is presented as entertainment, and is thus made to be engaging. Who wouldn't prefer the latter?
Anyway, it's important to know history to some extent, but unless you're into that kind of thing, going beyond the basics is just irrelevant, boring noise.
Unlike other topics you could study, history can't be applied to anything else. It doesn't teach you skills, or encourage you to think creatively or solve problems, or have artistic merit, or even provide anything engaging; it's just dumping facts into your head.
